UK government unveils £5,000 electric car incentive program

UK government unveils £5,000 electric car incentive program

The UK government has announced a £250 million ($372M USD) incentive program designed to get more plug-in and electric vehicles on British roads. The heart of the program is rebates of up to £5,000 (nearly $7,500) for purchases of full electric or plug-in hybrid vehicles. This could be good news for companies like Mitsubishi, Nissan and General Motors. The Japanese automakers are planning to introduce battery electric cars over the next two years and General Motors plans to launch the Vauxhall Ampera (a rebadged Chevy Volt) in 2011. The program is aimed primarily at next generation full function electric vehicles like the Ampera and Mitsubishi iMiEV rather than the existing crop of low speed vehicles like the Indian-made G-Wiz.

In addition to subsidizing car purchases, the government wants to make life a little easier for EV drivers by putting in more public charging outlets. £20 million (about $30M) of the project is set aside for building out the country's infrastructure of charge points. Thanks to Brother_Will for the Tip!

Bugatti Veyron Pur Sang for sale in Abu Dhabi

Bugatti Veyron Pur Sang edition

When Bugatti rolled out the limited-edition Pur Sang edition of its Veyron at the 2007 Frankfurt Motor Show, European customers snapped up all five before any American buyers could get their checkbooks out. As a result, Bugatti had to make the Sang Noir the following year and offer U.S. customers first crack at the limited run of fifteen. But for those who really wanted the original polished-aluminum and bare-carbon-fiber edition that kicked off the raft of special-edition Veyrons that followed, they may get that chance as one appears to have popped up for sale.

A premium car dealership in Abu Dhabi has posted an example of the Pur Sang for sale on its website. In all likelihood, this is the same example that was spotted on video a year ago and which showed up for the Top Gear photo shoot in good company a few months later. No word on price, or even confirmation that this is, indeed, a Pur Sang, but the website does allow you to place the order immediately. And if that doesn't tickle your fancy, they've got a Mansory Vincero up for grabs, too.

Lamborghini profits up 27% for 2008 due to cost-cutting, outlook for 2009 hazy

Lamborghini Gallardo LP-560

Lamborghini has released its pre-tax profits for 2008, and the supercar manufacturer netted a total of 60 million euros ($79.6 million) last year for a 27% increase over 2007. Overall sales were up a scant 2.5%, eclipsing the previous year's sales record (2,406 vehicles) with 2,430 cars sold worldwide. The increase in sales is attributed to growth in China and the Middle East, while sales in the U.S. fell by over 20% to just 741 vehicles (down from 930 in 2007). Obviously, the additional profits didn't come from a massive sales increase. Instead, Lamborghini placed 300 of its 1,000 employees on shorter work days from February through May, netting an additional savings.

Naturally, the automaker isn't bullish (rimshot) for 2009, with CEO Stephan Winkelmann admitting that the economic downturn is likely to affect Lamborghini's sales. However, it remains committed to bringing a new model to market each year, so expect more hotness from Sant'Agata in 2009 and beyond.

Toyota reportedly expects 40,000 pre-orders for new Prius

2010 Toyota Prius

The well-publicized battle for hybrid sales supremacy between Honda and Toyota has taken yet another intriguing turn. According to Japan's Nikkei newspaper, Toyota is saying that it expects to take 40,000 preorders in Japan for its new 2010 Prius hybrid ahead of its official rollout in May. For the sake of comparison, the Japanese automaker sold a total of 73,100 Prius hybrids in all of 2008.

More importantly, rival automaker Honda managed to sell about 18,000 copies of its latest Insight hybrid in its first month on sale. By all accounts, Honda was delighted to move that many Insights – the automaker had predicted that it would only sell about 5,000 units for the first month the hybrid was available in Japan.

A few months ago, Honda made a big splash by pricing the smaller, slightly less fuel efficient Insight a few million yen (or a few thousand dollars) below the starting price of the standard-setting Prius. In response, Toyota announced it would keep the previous generation Prius around for at least another year and dropped that model's price to match the Insight.

But that wasn't enough for Toyota – earlier this month, the automaker set the starting price for the new 2010 model at 2.05 million yen ($20,750), which is just about the same as the mid-level Insight. The next chapter: U.S. pricing for the 2010 Prius has yet to be announced. Let the games continue.

Mercedes-Benz adds AMG Sports pack for 2010 S and CL Class models

Mercedes-Benz S-Class with AMG Sports package

For those of you that can manage the payments on a lower-end Mercedes-Benz S-Class or CL-Class, but can't quite stretch enough to swing an S63 or S65, AMG now has you covered. Just as BMW offers M-Sport packages on some of its models, you can now add an AMG Sports pack to any S sedan, as well as the CL-500 coupe.

New front and rear fascias and rocker panel extensions give some of the more aggressive look of a true AMG model, and the S-Class' front air intakes feature LED running lights similar to what will be on the full blown S63/S65. Within the wheel wells are standard 19-inch alloy wheels or optional 20-inch units that again replicate the look of the more expensive versions.

There are functional changes as part of the package too. The AMG Sports pack includes bigger brakes with cross-drilled rotors. Inside, more wood trim including a combination wood/leather steering wheel are part of the effect. According to Mercedes, the package will be made available on all European short- or long-wheelbase sedans as well as the coupes starting in June, although there's no word yet on whether North Americans can expect the same availability.

Crash tests - big versus small

These videos are making the auto industry nervous. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducted a test that pitted some car companies smallest cars against versus the smallest offering in an offset crash. It’s the Smart ForTwo vs Mercedes C-Class, Honda Fit vs. Honda Accord, and Toyota Yaris vs. Toyota Camry.

The ForTwo is shown above and the Fit and the Yaris videos are after the jump. While the small ones have some pretty horrific damage, each of the small cars featured earned the IIHS’s top score of “good” in most of its other testing. The manufactures say that the test is not reflecting real-world conditions.

2010 Audi Q7 facelift

2010 Audi Q7 facelift

Casual observers probably didn't notice it, but Audi has released a face-lifted version of its Q7 SUV. On the outside a lot hasn't changed, with the updates mostly focused on the lighting, tailgate and paint colors. The head-light clusters are the same shape but now get the LED eye-liner treatment that has spread throughout much of the Audi lineup. The front bumper has also been subtly reshaped as well, while the rear light clusters now feature full LED elements and the tailgate has been reshaped to accommodate license plates for all countries.

Inside, the trim has been updated with more wood, but the big news is the third generation MMI navigation/entertainment/information system. The nav gets a 3D interface and joystick control for finding destinations. The Sirius satellite radio also provides traffic data now and accepts voice commands to find cash, food or gas, much like Ford's TravelLink system. Powertrains for the US pretty much carryover and include the new 3.0-liter TDI diesel. Over in Europe, the optional 4.2-liter TDI V8 is now up to 340 hp and 560 lb-ft of torque. The fuel consumption of the diesel V8 has been reduced with mileage on the European combined cycle going from 21.2 to 23.8 mpg (US).

BMW launches AK-47 thwarting X5 Security Plus

If Jason Statham's character, Frank, decides to switch back to a BMW in The Transporter 4, we think we have his new ride picked out. Or maybe Clive Owen just needs to film another episode of The Driver. BMW has just released info on its first Class Six bullet resistant vehicle, the BMW X5 Security Plus, which happens to be the first vehicle ever available to the public with that classification from a high-volume manufacturer. That means that its skin can handle anything up to a AK-47 assault rifle, the weapon-of-choice for terrorists, pirates and kidnappers around the globe. Besides thicker bulletproof glass, BMW has added heavier armored body panels all around, as well as sealing up all of the joints to bolster protection in normally vulnerable body panel gaps.

The Security Plus models are partially built alongside the regular models in Spartanburg, SC, and then sent to Toluca, Mexico for final assembly. Some of the special features that are fitted include a beefed-up suspension with special run-flat tires, an intercom system to communicate with people outside the vehicle, a hold-up alarm that automatically locks windows and doors, plus sirens and flashing lights too. There's also a list of options that includes a rear view camera and a front-bumper-mounted side view camera. It's powered by BMW's 355 horsepower, 4.80-liter V8, and even with the extra equipment, this crossover can scoot from 0 to 62 miles-per-hour in 8.2 seconds on its way to a top speed electronically limited to 112 mph.

MTM adopts Porsche GT3 green for latest force-fed Audi R8R

MTM Audi R8 in Porsche GT3 green
MTM Audi R8 in Porsche GT3 green
MTM Audi R8 in Porsche GT3 green

As cool as owning an Audi R8 may be, the German supercar is becoming common enough that in tonier markets, you may just pass another one on your daily commute. Chances are you'll even pass one in the same color, which might make the ownership experience slightly less special for the driver. That particular dilemma is what the aftermarket has always thrived on. German tuner MTM has already shown that they are more than capable of adding extra oomph to your ride to help make it stand out from the crowd, but with their latest project, they are also showing how a simple change of color can work wonders in giving your prized ride a whole new aura.

While Porsche purists might question the decision, this particular MTM Audi R8R has been done up in Porsche GT3 (2D8) green, and it's a minty-fresh looker. With a subtle aero kit, new MTM Bimoto rims and a blower that helps it match its corporate cousin the Lamborghini LP560-4, this particular project has more than a little extra snap. The real draw here, however, is the hue, done to show how far personalization can go if you bring your baby to MTM.

Mercedes-Benz SLS Roadster coming in 2011

F1 Live Streaming
In a story that's sure to surprise no one, France's L'Automobile magazine is reporting that the upcoming Mercedes-Benz SLS supercar will be available in Roadster form sometime in 2011. According to the report, the gull-wing SLS will make its debut at the Frankfurt Motor Show this September and will go on sale in the spring of 2010. Like the 300SL inspiration, the SLS will be available in fixed-roof and drop-top guise, with both versions powered by an AMG-fettled 6.2-liter V8 putting out 571 hp. However, it's unclear whether M-B will utilize a folding hard-top or a more traditional canvas roof design.

Aston Martin Rapide nears production, first official image released

F1 Live Streaming

The Aston Martin Rapide edges ever closer to production as a new image has just been released by the now-independent automaker. As was obvious from all the spy photos seen over this past year, Aston has retained much of the 2006 concept's original look. However, there are some details that have changed. Judging from this image, it appears that the sedan's shoulder now has a sharper crease than the original. A convex ridge now extends back from the front fender vents into the leading edge of the back doors.

One of the most obvious competitors to the Rapide is the new Porsche Panamera, and while the two cars share much in concept, they have diverged greatly in styling. Porsche went for function over form, ensuring that adult-sized rear passengers can fit comfortably and see out of the car. The sweeping greenhouse of the Aston looks like it might leave a tighter, more claustrophobic rear compartment. Also, Porsche calls the Panamera a gran turismo while Aston calls the Rapide a four-door sports car, an appellation far more fitting here than on a Nissan Maxima.

The 470-hp V12-powered Rapide will be built at a Magna Steyr factory in Graz, Austria starting late in 2009.

First Drive: 2010 Mazda3

2010 Mazda3

Automakers have to walk a thin line when updating a sales success or perennial favorite. It's even worse when the outgoing model embodies both traits. The "evolution not revolution" line gets tossed around the engineering and design centers with the hope the two teams can build off the current model's strengths while simultaneously delivering the upgraded content consumers expect. The 2010 Mazda3 proves it can be done.

With nearly one-third of all Mazdas sold with a 3 appended to the rear, the 2010 model had to continue to meet and exceed expectations in its class, something that's difficult to do when battling it out for compact supremacy among Toyota Corollas and Honda Civics. Thankfully, the features that made the original Mazda3 the leader in its segment – an expressive exterior, well-appointed interior and surprisingly engaging driving dynamics – not only carry over for 2010, but have been improved across the board. After a day of driving, the new 3 wasn't the only one wearing a grin. And oh, what a grin it is.
The new corporate face of Mazda is unexpectedly endearing in person. Pulled from the series of Nagare concepts that have graced show stands over the past three years, the new fascia is slightly overwhelming at first glance, but once you get past the massive five-point grille and start admiring the details, it's far more cohesive than it comes across in photos.

Despite the arresting amount of black plastic, the air inlet feeding the radiator is actually smaller than the outgoing model. Most of the stretched, diamond-shaped detailing is blocked off, further enhancing the new 3's aerodynamic shape that registers in at .29 Cd for the sedan and .31 for the wagon. The intakes flanking the grille are sculpted in such a way that they protrude out of the front bumper in a series of angles and lines that prove incredibly complimentary and tie in with the bulbous front fenders and swept back headlamps. The 3 is unmistakably Mazda, but fans of the Nagare theme may question if this was the best application of the marque's "flow" aesthetic.

The sides of both the sedan and wagon benefit from a subtle crease that begins at the leading edge of the front door, sweeps upwards and widens at the rear. While we've always been fans of the five-door over the standard sedan, the new four-door model is remarkably more attractive than before, losing much of the outgoing model's anonycar profile for something that's both aggressive and subdued.

More surprisingly, it's hard to pick a favorite rump between the hatch and the sedan. Both are completely reworked, with the four-door benefiting from a strong character line surrounding the trunk and a small lip spoiler that perfectly accentuates the organic creases. The hatch also undergoes an overhaul, but the design is much closer to the first generation model, save the stretched pentagon-shaped window inspired by the new fascia and a tweaked spoiler that bleeds off the roof. Both body styles feature distinctly different tail-lamps, each angular and each bulging off the fenders. They're incredibly attractive, although the clear housings are a nod to the '90s that disrupts an otherwise 21st century design.

Mazda isn't immune from the trend of making vehicles larger and safer – and thus, heavier – but with the strategic use of high-tensile steel, bending rigidity is up by 7% and torsional rigidity is the same as the outgoing model, helping the body-in-white drop some 24 pounds. However, when applying the new trim levels and optional equipment, the overall weight is increased by between 50 and 100 pounds. It's a nominal gain in this day and age, but still means the 2010 model can exceed 3,000 pounds depending on spec.

Although the wheelbase of the new 3 still spans 103.9 inches, the front and rear overhangs have increased the overall length to 180.9 inches. The larger fuel tank and redesigned exhaust suck up any additional space inside, but when an interior is this good, both driver and passengers alike aren't worried about a few fractions of an inch here and there.

Inside, it's clear Mazda's "Zoom-Zoom" ethic doesn't stop with an exceptional chassis and competent drivetrains. The interior is focused on the driver, with all the primary controls within easy reach and in many cases, canted inward ala old-school BMWs. The instrument panel is comprised of an oversized speedometer and tach, with a digital fuel gauge and trip computer nestled in between. Disturbingly, there's no coolant temperature gauge, something we hope is rectified when the Mazdaspeed3 goes on sale later this year.

To the right of the driver are two displays: a multi-information screen showing fuel metrics, stereo settings and other useful tidbits (or houses the optional navigation system), with a smaller LCD to the right that displays the climate control and shows basic audio information. Both displays are clear and uncluttered, although the tiny screen makes the navigation system seem like an afterthought and the software's ease-of-use is hit-and-miss. More problematic: the controls for the GPS are only accessible by steering wheel-mounted switchgear, so passengers who want to select a destination are left twiddling their thumbs while the driver navigates through the menu substructure.

The list of options on our maxed-out S Grand Touring tester reads like a late-model Mercedes-Benz, and includes automatic, self-leveling bi-xenon headlamps; push-button start; dual-zone climate control; rain-sensing wipers; heated mirrors and seats; leather; an eight-way adjustable driver's seat with three-position memory; a Bose 10-speaker audio system with iPod and Bluetooth connectivity; Sirius satellite radio; and stability and traction control. In short, there's more kit available than the outgoing 3 and it comes in $240 less than a comparably equipped 2009 model. Looking to downsize, but still want a modicum of luxury? The Mazda3 has you covered. And fuel-economy and power is up to boot.

Two engines are available for 2010: the "i" model's 2.0-liter inline-four putting out 148 hp and 135 lb-ft of torque, or the all-new 2.5-liter MZR four-cylinder (which replaces the 2.3-liter mill). The latter puts out 167 hp and 168 lb-ft of torque in "s" trim. Coupled with either a five-speed auto 'box or a welcomed six-speed manual, the "s" with the manual gearbox is rated at 21 mpg city and 29 mpg highway, while the "i" variant comes in at 25 city and 33 highway.

Out on the road, everything we loved about the original 3 is present in spades. The steering is more communicative than some sports cars we've sampled, transmitting information directly from the road to your palms, yet the system avoids any sensation of on-edge skittishness. The brakes are both progressive and powerful, and after repeated threshold stops and ABS activations, they never faded and continued to offer a predictable pedal feel.

While the new 2.5-liter doesn't offer a particularly sexy or refined engine note, power delivery is linear and more than adequate for both runs around town and the occasional back-road excursion. The six-speed manual is exactly what we'd expect in a modern-day Mazda – smooth, precise and rewarding to row – while the learning curve for clutch take-up is as shallow as a middle-school cheerleader.

But more than anything, it's how all these pieces play together with the chassis and the 205/50 R17 rubber (on "s" models) that continues to amaze and inspire. Unlike its closest competitors, you get the sense Mazda's engineers put the driving experience at the top of their task list, but not at the expense of ride and comfort. The chassis soaks up road imperfections with aplomb, and only the most maniacal mid-corner corrections on less-than-perfect surfaces upset the 3's composure. When pushed, the Mazda3 shoves, transitioning from class-leading levels of grip to progressive understeer that's easily controlled with a slight lift of the throttle or a left-foot dab of the brake.

Although the tweaks to the 3's chassis are minimal – an additional mount for the steering rack (from two to three), the aforementioned structural enhancements and front and rear anti-rollbars positioned further outward – it all adds up to deliver a crisp, polished package that stands in stark contrast to the dynamically numb competition that often charge more and deliver less.

Both the Mazda3 four-door and five-door are available for almost every budget, ranging from the entry-level "i" sv sedan with a five-speed manual starting at $15,045, to the range-topping, automatic-equipped "s" wagon GrandTouring at $22,300. With a plethora of options that could keep even the most jaded luxury refugee pleased and a chassis that delivers almost all the dynamic thrills of a focused sports sedan, the 2010 Mazda3 is easily the final word on engaging transportation on a budget. And above all else, that's something to smile about.
