Porsche releases complete pricing on Panamera for the UK

Last month, Porsche announced U.S. pricing for its upcoming Panamera luxury sedan. Today, we get official word on UK pricing for the all-new model. The standard rear-wheel drive Panamera S with a 400-hp V8, good for 0-62 mph sprints in 5.4 seconds (according to the automaker), will start with a base price of £72,266. Meanwhile, pricing for the Panamera 4S will begin at £77,269. That model's all-wheel drive system helps it launch 0-62 mph in just 5.0 seconds. The range-topping AWD Panamara Turbo, with 0-62 mph in 4.2 seconds, lists at £95,298.

Only the Panamera S will be offered with a six-speed manual gearbox -- the 4S and Turbo models receive Porsche's seven-speed PDK (dual-clutch) transmission as standard equipment (U.S. cars will initially only be available with PDK). As is typical with Porsche, there is an extensive options menu that includes a full leather interior, Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM), Porsche Communication Management, bi-xenon headlamps, rear ParkAssist, and Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes (PCCB). The standard wheels are 18-inch alloys on the Panamera and Panamera S models while the Panamera Turbo sports 19-inch aluminum wheels. Of course, Porsche will offer 20-inch wheels to those who like to slalom potholes.

Lamborghini has just released the first batch of official images showing its latest limited run special, the Murciélago LP 650-4 Roadster, which follows the LP 670-4 SuperVeloce that debuted at the Geneva Motor Show earlier this month. The LP 650-4 Roadster is definitely not for those who deny their follicle deficiencies by wearing a rug on their head. With a top speed of 205 mph, anything not firmly connected to your scalp will be lost to the winds.

The crew in Sant'Agata Bolognese have pumped some extra shots of espresso into this bull – the 6.5-liter V12 now produces 650 hp and 487 lb-ft of torque through all four wheels. That's enough to leave 62 mph in your wake after just 3.4 seconds. Lamborghini is only planning to crank out 50 of these roadsters at an as yet undisclosed price.

BMW Z10 ED to tackle Audi R8

The BMW Z10 ED -- Efficient Dynamics -- is a green supercar that's out to get the Audi R8. Tech specs are hypothesized to be a high-pressure turbocharged inline six cylinder with 400 hp that would use either a mechanical valve system or BMW's VANOS system, and run through a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission. Along with electronic stop/start aids, there would be technology to turn exhaust gasses into electricity. With the use of plenty of carbon fiber and aluminum, the car is meant to weigh no more than 3,080 pounds.

Even though it hasn't stopped Ferrari and Lamborghini, lead BMW designer Adrian Van Hooydonk thinks it might be hard to sell the Z10 with a supercar body in a global recession. Most importantly, though, he wants the car to be a symbol of the future, and to offer an "exciting dynamic experience." We can't imagine the sketch is anything go by, unless he also wants the car to try and eat you.

Toyota to offer cheaper Prius to compete with Honda Insight

According to the ever-flowing and always active rumormill, Toyota may be working on a new low-cost hybrid to do battle with the revived Honda Insight, which is a bit smaller than its rival from Toyota and undercuts its price by a few thousand dollars (or a few million yen). Likely due in no small part to its low point of entry, Honda managed to move 18,000 Insight hybrids in Japan in its first month on sale, which is well above the automaker's early projections.

The new hybrid from Toyota would use similar hybrid components as the Prius but would use a smaller engine and cost 20-30% less. Even if these rumors are true, Toyota still plans to continue selling its previous-generation Prius in Japan for at least the 2010 model year alongside the new model, which features better performance from an enlarged 1.8-liter engine while still managing to reduce fuel consumption. So far, there's no indication that Toyota will sell a lower-cost hybrid model in the U.S.

Citroen to launch green sub-brand

According to an unnamed "insider," Citroen is considering launching a separate brand just for eco-friendly vehicles. Earlier this year, the quirky French automaker announced a new high-end brand that would bring premium features to its existing vehicle platforms. Similarly, the first production vehicle under the green brand would echo the C-Cactus concept from the Frankfurt Motor Show in 2007 but be built atop the automaker's C4 platform.

Expect some innovative uses of materials, as previewed on the C-Cactus project, along with a fuel-saving powertrain of some sort. Options include going fully electric, using a hybrid powertrain or using a small three-cylinder diesel engine that would put out less than 100 g/km of carbon emissions. Sounds great, but let's just hope they don't keep too much of the melted-candle look of the concept.

Bugatti to unveil new model in September

If you were disappointed by the Bleu Centenaire edition of the Veyron that Bugatti unveiled at the Geneva Motor Show this month to celebrate its 100th anniversary, you're not alone. Hopes were high that the long-anticipated higher-output version of the Veyron would be unveiled at the Swiss show. But fret not, at least if these latest reports are to be believed, as Bugatti is said to be preparing an altogether new car that will be unveiled in September.

Details are scarce at this point, but keen to stay ahead of the competition, Bugatti is said to be considering several options that would, figuratively speaking, fit into the same mold as the Veyron. That means another seven-figure, record-beating supercar, likely with an even more powerful version of the Veyron's thousand-horsepower, quad-turbo W16 engine. With Veyron production winding to a close, we could see a concept version of its successor at the upcoming Frankfurt Motor Show after the summer break, with the next Bugatti hitting the market in 2011 or 2012. The hope is by that time people might actually have the cash to blow on a new supercar.

Second Lagonda concept coming in May

Regardless of the varied opinions on the new look of the Lagonda line, the Aston Martin spinoff may just be the brand to watch this year. In a time when car companies are scaling back on concepts and cutting budgets, Lagonda will be unveiling a second concept car before the summer.

In an interview with Le Blog Auto, Aston Martin board member and partial owner, David Richards said the concept shown in Geneva was just to test public reaction. There will be another car revealed in May that will be "completely opposite to the one you saw in Geneva."

There is no indication yet if Aston Martin is planning a two-vehicle line of is just sending out concept car until one really resonates with the public. What we do know is that at least one car will stick to the points announced by Aston Martin CEO Dr. Ulrich Bez. That menas Lagonda will cover territory not covered by traditional Aston Martins (i.e. crossover or SUV), and it shoulc be based on the Mercedes GL platform.

Volkswagen GTI-R with AWD coming to Frankfurt

The rumored Volkswagen Scirocco R20T never made an appearance at the Geneva Motor Show, but according to CAR, V-Dub has something else up its sleeve for this year's Frankfurt Motor Show. The Brit pub is reporting the imminent arrival of the Volkswagen Golf GTI-R, a hotter version of VW's iconic hatch with a more powerful variant of the turbocharged 2.0-liter motivating all four wheels.

The turbo'd four-pot is related to the Audi S3's mill, so expect output to be up and over 260 hp. And, according to the report, a major element of the GTI-R is weight reduction, so VW has opted to use the 2.0-liter turbo in favor of its 3.2-liter V6. The supposed weight-loss regime might come in the form of lighter structural and body components, along with a less luxurious interior that won't infringe on the premium confines of the R32 and Scirocco. Then again, with the additional weight of the AWD system – versus the Focus RS and Renaultsport Megane 250, which both use a trick front differential to limit torque steer – the overall weight could be a wash over the standard GTI. CAR says the GTI-R should debut in Frankfurt this fall, with sales beginning in late 2009 or early 2010.

The first Datsun 240Z rolled into American showrooms in 1969. Four decades later, we've got our hands wrapped around the thick, leather, multi-function steering wheel of its direct descendant, the all-new 370Z. With a 332 hp V6 and a six-speed manual transmission directing power to the rear wheels, our outlook is decidedly positive as we head out on the street (our First Drive on the track was back in December). Is all of the hype surrounding this new coupe justified? How does it compare to the GT-R? Just how did the all-new Z-car fare after a week in our garage?

Our test model had been plunged in a bath of Monterey Blue paint at the Tochigi, Japan production facility and with a tint of metallic in its reflection, the all-new for 2009 coupe looks stunning with its shorter wheelbase and wide stance. Still instantly recognized as a "Z," the aluminum and steel sheet metal is wrapped aggressively around Nissan's "front midships" (FM) platform, shared with the Infiniti FX and G37 family. From the toothed front grille to the flared rear fenders, the styling leaves little doubt about its intended sports car mission. With more than a passing resemblance to the Nissan GT-R, the 370Z lures stares and thumbs-up from pedestrians, and stoplight competitions from boy racers.



The interior of the 370Z is just as impressive. Forget everything you knew about the questionable 350Z interior – the 370Z is nice enough to wear an Infiniti badge. Top rate upholstery, plastics, and synthetics exist in abundance within the cozy cockpit. There is storage (or an optional NAV system) above the audio system. The three-pod IP, with three more gauges center-mounted high on the dash, is just about perfect. Unfortunately, the earned grade drops two full letters with the inclusion of that terrible fuel/coolant temperature mess on the far left. While it looks really poor in pictures, it's even worse in practice as the slightest bit of ambient light washes it out (or you find yourself mindlessly counting the remaining dots on the fuel gauge).



This writer's six-foot two-inch frame fit comfortably into the supportive and nicely bolstered cloth seats. The cabin accommodates two with abundant legroom, headroom, and shoulder room. The steering wheel is meaty, and all controls fall readily to hand without a hint awkwardness. Our tested was lightly optioned (at $34,055 it was only fitted with the sport package, floor mats, and splash guards), yet it didn't feel stripped-down or budget-rate. From the driver's seat, the only real drawback – outward visibility – is blamed on the exterior styling. The view of the outside world is hampered by the massive C-pillars just behind the ears, the tiny slit of a rear window, and the oversized exterior mirrors that seem to occupy more than their share of the front quarter visibility. It take several days to acclimate to the sight restrictions, but it does become bearable.



Nestled under the alloy hood of the 370Z is another one of Nissan's familiar VQ powerplants: the all-aluminum VQ37VHR. In Z configuration, it's rated at 332 hp and 270 lb-ft of torque (the identical powerplant under the hood of the G37 is rated at 330 hp and 270 lb-ft, but the Infiniti coupe lugs around another several hundred pounds of weight). Our test model was fitted with a six-speed manual transmission (a seven-speed auto is available) sending power to the rear wheels through a viscous limited-slip differential. An aluminum double-wishbone suspension sits up front, while the rear wheels are kept in check through an independent multi-link setup. Four beautifully-crafted lightweight forged RAYS wheels – some of the most attractive alloy from any OEM – are pushed into each corner. The fronts are wrapped in 245/40-19 tires, with the rears boast meaty 275/35-19 rubber. An extensive use of aluminum throughout (hood, doors, rear hatch, subframe components, etc...) has kept weight down to about 3,250 pounds.



The 370Z features the first-of-its-kind, and all-new, SynchroRev Match system for the manual transmission. Greatly simplified, the throttle is automatically blipped, putting the engine speed precisely where it needs to be when the clutch is reengaged during downshifts. While it does make an occasional erroneous decision (move the stick shift above second gear at highway speeds and it will scare your large intestines empty), its ability to nail every single downshift flawlessly is uncanny. It does exactly what it is supposed to do the manual transmission... but... maybe it shouldn't?



Quite frankly, something seems just a bit off kilter. The standard transmission elitists among us begrudgingly smiled as the electronically-controlled slush box caught up to the smoothness of a well-shifted manual. We looked the other way when it matched the manual's fuel efficiency and kept grinning even when it was obvious that an automatic could be quicker in a sprint. None of this mattered, as our traditional third-pedal manual transmission was left virtually untouched. Now, this brilliant new automotive technology is encroaching on sacred ground by replacing a time-honed skill (aka rev-matching) with a microchip. Is this no longer considered a "manual" transmission? Where do we draw the line? With a sigh of apprehension, we'll exonerate Nissan this time as the system may be completely defeated at the touch of a button – thankfully.

Nissan doesn't quote acceleration times, but most honest print rags are finding the 370Z hits 60 mph in about five seconds. As expected, it feels quicker than the 350Z. In our unofficial (and non-abusive) testing, we snapped off a 5.1 second run without much effort (our GT-R did 3.5 seconds flat with the identical testing equipment, but with launch control). The limited-slip rear end hooks up well, and a blinking shift light helps the driver stay out of redline above 7,500 RPM. The 370Z will pull away from its cousin, the Infiniti G37 Coupe, but it won't take a BMW's 135i in a drag race (especially if the German is fitted with a chip).



We put about 700 miles on the blue Z over a one-week period. Aside from the inherent inadequacies of owning a two-seat coupe with a family (the GT-R is a 2+2, so it deftly handles carpools in a pinch), the 370Z proved capable and well-suited as a daily driver with only a few minor irritations. First, while the cabin is well insulated from wind noise, it seriously resonates from tire drone. At speeds above 70 mph, or on any unfriendly pavement, the roar nearly drowns out the audio system. Our second gripe is with cargo space. While Nissan moved the rear cargo brace forward, the trunk is still extremely shallow. You may get a framed carry-on bag in there, but everything else will have to be soft if it's going to fit.



During our obligatory 200-mile day trip across the LA basin, the Z proved comfortable in traffic as the 3.7-liter pulled from low on the tachometer, limiting the amount of leg work needed on the clutch. The engine makes a nice growl at idle, but it's quickly lost once the engine spools and the mechanical noises up front drown out the two resonators in the rear (we are still waiting for VQ-equipped Nissan product with an impressive exhaust note). Although it never lets us down, the VQ engine isn't known around these circles for smoothness either. This character trait is immediately apparent once the tach speeds past 4,500 rpm and the stick shift starts really trembling. By 6,000 rpm, it's vibrating like a blender full of margarita mix and square ice cubes. The VQ wins countless awards, but it will never be confused with a smooth-running inline- or flat-six.



At open highway speeds, the 370Z is more stable than most cars are sitting still in a parking lot. It's an amazing trait considering the short wheelbase and wide tires. We don't know if credit goes to the low drag numbers, near absence of lift, or the exhaustive chassis tuning. Whatever it is, Nissan needs to ensure they don't let it slip away as it adds a layer of confidence that is often absent in cars costing five-times as much. Straight-line stability is one thing, but the true assessment is found on the corners.

State Route 23 (aka Decker Canyon Road) kisses the Pacific Ocean on its southern end, and then winds steeply up the mountain as it makes its way inland. Banned to vehicles with more than two axles, the first ten miles of the freshly-paved road delivers more twists than a full season of Desperate Housewives. Not as popular as Mulholland Drive (or as crowded), it is an excellent place to wring the guts out of a small sports car. It also happens to be the identical road that faced its sibling -- the Nissan GT-R -- last summer.



Without a doubt, the GT-R is quicker and more surefooted of the two, especially on the public canyon road. It will easily distance itself from the hapless 370Z (to be expected – especially at nearly triple the price). With electronic subsystems manipulating nearly every moving part, the GT-R claws at the pavement and puts the power down perfectly. The 370Z is lacking nearly all of the masterful processing power and electronic trickery of the flagship, so it relies on its much lighter curb weight and immense cornering grip to try to play in the same league.

As a result, the 370Z delivers a more hands-on (and challenging) driving experience than the GT-R. Don't get us wrong, it still isn't as intimate as a Porsche Cayman or Boxster (at double the Nissan's price), but it does give you the close aural feedback that Godzilla retains at an arm's length. Bolted to an amazingly rigid platform, the non-adjustable Z suspension is tight, but there is still noticeable body roll in the corners and nose dive under braking (the Nissan would brush its lower splitter on the asphalt into a tight banked uphill turn). Under throttle, and with a slight flick of the wrist, the rear wheels can easily be coaxed to step out if the overly cautious stability control is switched off. The steering feel and ratios are both good, and the transmission gearing works well. The oversized aluminum-caliper multi-piston brakes (from Akebono, not Brembo) feel like they can stop world hunger.



Parked after a hot run, the new 370Z sits patiently in the shade. The silence, only broken by the metallic ticking of the exhaust components as they discharge retained heat, offers no hint as to the contention in the growing coupe segment. New import competition from below arrives in the form of the Hyundai Genesis Coupe, undercutting the Nissan's price by thousands. Sitting just above, with a sticker too close to be comfortable, is the family's own Infiniti G37 Coupe. Of course, there will always be the comparisons to the Ford Mustang, Chevrolet Camaro, Porsche Cayman, Chevrolet Corvette, and even the Nissan GT-R. There is much to worry about, especially as customers vanish in today's economy.



Without question, the all-new 370Z is undeniably much more exceptional than any model preceding it. However, the Nissan isn't going to sell itself on a test drive. Fifteen minutes behind the wheel simply isn't long enough to appreciate the power of the engine, the balance of the suspension, or the poise of the chassis. The 370Z improves, and becomes more confidence-inspiring, as time is spent in the driver's seat. While the sixth-generation Z-car isn't exactly the sports car to dethrone all others, at this price point, few others can touch its performance.

Lewis Hamilton controls F1 car via Blackberry Storm

Vodaphone is a huge mobile communications company, and it's also the primary sponsor of the McLaren Mercedes F1 team. The video after the jump shows just what their millions of dollars in sponsorship money can buy: a viral video staring Lewis Hamilton. Vodaphone makes the Blackberry Storm mobile smart phone, and the video kicks off with some office nerds who have hacked the Storm to control an R/C F1 car. They use the phone's built-in accelerometer so that turning the phone like a steering wheel controls the car's direction. The accelerator and the brake, meanwhile, are controlled via buttons on the phone's touch screen.

After publishing a video of their office grand prix on the web, the team of programmers is invited to the garage of McLaren Mercedes where team engineers have adapted the system to control Lewis Hamilton's actual F1 car. Hilarity ensues when Hamilton himself takes the car out on the track, sans driver, and does a lap behind the wheel of the Blackberry Storm. It's an amusing viral video and halfway convincing if we weren't willing to swear on our mothers that McLaren Mercedes would never allow its multi-million dollar F1 car to be controlled via a phone, let alone outfit the car with enough servos to actually perform the functions of steering, braking and changing gears.

UK offers £27 million to Land Rover to build LRX

When Land Rover unveiled the LRX concept at the Detroit Auto Show in 2008, it said the CUV was "Conceived as a 2.0-litre, Federalised, turbodiesel hybrid, with potential CO2 emissions of 120 g/km." That appealed to the UK government, which has confirmed it has extended a grant offer of up to £27 million to Land Rover to produce an all-new vehciles based on the LRX. Land Rover says it will make a decision on the project, which could cost up to £400 million, later this year. If the car is a go, it would "be the smallest, lightest and most efficient [Land Rover] has ever produced." That's not exactly a monumental thing, considering Land Rover's lineup, but it is the right direction to go. You can watch a video about the LRX here.

Land Rover called the LRX the company's second concept vehicle in 60 years, although that's debatable depending on who you ask. Whatever the case, the LRX was a hit, winning the "Concept Truck of the Year" award in the North American Concept Vehicle of the Year Awards and generating plenty of praise.

Reventon for sale in Dubai (and everywhere else too!)

Even with the state of the world’s economy it is almost certain that this supercar will be sold in no time all, even with its €1,580,000 (almost $ 2 Million) price tag. Let me tell you why, this Lamborghini Reventon is sitting at a dealership in Dubai. The emirate that was once rich with oil now profits from being a hub for business and destination for tourists. Dubai has become a center of wealth and extravagance. The Reventon exudes both.

The Reventon is a limited production supercar with only 20 examples being manufactured. The Lamborghini is powered by a 6.5 Liter V12 engine that delivers 650 HP at 8000 RPM and can hit a top speed of 211 MPH (340 km/h).

However this is not the only Reventon up for grabs. Jameslist is tracking 7 of the Italian supercars that are up for sale!

Toyota develops world's first center rear seat airbag

Over the last several decades, automakers have made great strides in addressing safety issues, first for front seat occupants and more recently for those in the back. Three point seat-belts are now pretty much universal in the rear compartment, as are head restraints. Curtain airbags are also becoming standard issue in most cars to provide extra protection when the car is impacted from the side. But how do you protect the rear seat occupants from each other?

Toyota has devised a new center position rear air bag that deploys from a roof mounted console. The new bag deploys from the ceiling during a side impact to minimize injuries that can occur when occupants collide with each other. Presumably (hopefully!) this bag does not deploy if someone is actually occupying the center position in the rear. Toyota reports that this new bag will debut this year on a domestic market Toyota vehicle.

At the LA Auto Show in November, Ford unveiled the updated 2010 Fusion and its hybrid stablemate to considerable fanfare. When we got the chance to drive the Fusion a month later we came away impressed, although some of you found the new, larger three-bar grille even more obnoxious than the original. Since visual appeal is highly subjective, it's fortunate that Ford hasn't killed off the Mercury brand just yet. For a relatively minimal investment, Ford can offer the same mechanical package in a more understated wrapper and the result is this: the 2010 Mercury Milan Hybrid.

Under the skin and between the axles, it's indistinguishable from its Fusion counterpart. But up front, it's an entirely different story. The Milan is equipped with the standard vertical bar grille shared by the rest of the Mercury line-up, but there's more to making a Mercury than a bit of rhinoplasty and a new set of badges.

At the front, the Milan's new nose is a bit more rounded than its predecessor, with the area surrounding the grille now standing out a bit from the bumper and flowing smoothly into the hood. Instead of the power dome found on the Fusion, the Milan has two chamfered edges that extend back to the base of the A-pillars. The new headlights actually appear closer to those found on the previous Fusion, with a taller, narrower stacked appearance compared to the 2009 Milan. At the rear, the shape of the tail-lights is basically the same, although the details of the cluster design are changed. The back bumper is more smoothly integrated, with less visual offset from the rest of the body.



Even with the major refresh for the 2010 model year, the basic profile of the Milan and Fusion hasn't really changed, but that isn't necessarily a bad thing. Because Americans have largely forsaken coupe and wagon body styles for cars over the past two decades, the Milan, like most other mainstream cars, is now only available in a four-door sedan.



The profile may not be the most exciting in the world, but it's clean and handsome. The proportions of the three-box shape and the relatively low roof profile give a sporty overall effect. Unfortunately, the same roof-line that keeps the Milan from looking top-heavy also means that, when equipped with the optional sliding sun-roof, rear seat head-room is significantly degraded for six-footers and up. However, leg-room remains plentiful in the back as well as the front.



In the command position, the Milan has the same interior as the Fusion -- again, a good thing in our experience. Even on the pre-production example we sampled, everything was tightly screwed together with nice soft-touch materials and logically laid out controls. The front seats are very comfortable and supportive, covered in fabric made from 100% post-industrial recycled materials. Unlike many other cars in its class, the Milan's front seat lower cushions aren't excessively short and provide decent thigh support.



The steering wheel has a pleasantly thick leather-wrapped rim with switches for the audio system, cruise control, voice commands and the SmartGauge setup. We kept the SmartGauge in the hyper-miler special "Empower" mode most of the week because of two additional bits of information it shows in addition to the usual battery power flow and instantaneous mileage. One is the EV window, which appears on the power output gauge. Mounted to the left of the battery power flow, the gauge shows the total drivetrain power output and also shows a floating green window representing the power range where the car can operate in EV mode. If the current output is above this window, backing off the gas pedal can bring the power level down and when you get into the designated window, the engine shuts off. To the left of the power gauge is the accessory power gauge, which reflects the amount of power being consumed by accessories such as the headlights, heat and the window defogger.

Our first exposure to the Fusion Hybrid two months ago was in the spiritual home of the hybrid: Hollywood, CA. So. Cal. is the ideal environment for gas-electric vehicles and EVs, with its temperate weather and lots of stop-and-go driving. Back home in Michigan it's a very different situation. On the West Coast, it's not an unreasonable prospect to drive around the majority of the time without having to use such auxiliary systems as heat, window defoggers, wipers and even headlights. Someone serious about extracting every last ounce of power from a gallon of gas could do so comfortably in California.



This is not the case when temperatures dip down to 10 degrees. When the windows are frosted over and just breathing fogs the inside of the glass, there's no option outside of running the heat. When that happens on a cold dark morning, that accessory power gauge starts to climb and EV mode is all but impossible to achieve until the engine warms up. As a result, matching the 43 mpg we got driving in Hollywood is impossible. Once the engine and interior heat up, however, it's not hard to get the engine to shut off at cruising speeds up to 47 mph. Over a week of mostly city driving, we averaged a still impressive 29.4 mpg with the Milan -- about 2.4 mpg more than we got in similar conditions with the Camry hybrid a couple of weeks before -- but a far cry from our earlier result.

Compared to the Toyota, the Milan also has an extra 1.4 cu-ft of trunk space to net 12 cu-ft. The Milan also has excellent dynamic capabilities for a mainstream mid-size sedan. Even with the low rolling resistance tires on the hybrid, the car never feels squirrelly like the Honda Civic hybrid and the steering of the Milan is well weighted and provides good feedback.



The day after our tester arrived, four inches of fresh snow blanketed our Michigan outpost, so we went to a nearby empty parking lot to sample the electronic stability control. The Continental-supplied brake system performed admirably in the fresh snow, allowing the Milan to track wherever the wheel was pointed with the combination of engine and brake control seamlessly adjusting the torque at each corner. There was no annoying beeping (do you hear that Toyota?) or kick-back in the steering. The flashing warning lamp was the only indication that the ESC was active.

Overall, Ford's hybrid system is more than just an admirable effort. It has the smoothest operation of any of the systems that have passed through the AutoblogGreen Garage, and drivers will have a hard time detecting the transitions between the engine running and the switch to EV mode. Cruising on the highway with the radio off, the Milan is remarkably free of wind or road noise and Ford offers a choice of flashy or subdued faces on an excellent mid-size hybrid sedan, so what's not to like? Aside from wishing an automaker would offer a station wagon this size, we really have only one complaint, the price.



The Milan hybrid starts at $27,500 and our test example totaled out at $33,735, including the nav system, up-level Sony audio, moon-roof, blind spot detection and rear camera. The navigation and telematics is easily the best we've tried from any automaker, but the base price of the hybrid is certainly steep and clearly a function of Ford being reluctant to sell the car at a loss in these difficult times. It's about $1,000 more than a Camry hybrid, although it comes standard with 17-inch aluminum wheels, fog-lights and satellite radio, which combined add $1,500 to the Toyota.

Ford recently crossed the 60,000 hybrid sales threshold, which means that the company's eligibility for federal tax credits is soon being phased out. If you pick up a Fusion or Milan before the end of March 2009, the IRS will give you $3,400 back, after which the credit is cut in half for the next six months. After October it goes to just $850 and in April 2010 it's gone altogether. Toyotas and Hondas are no longer eligible for those tax credits.



As good as the 2010 Mercury Milan hybrid is, it makes the case that Ford VP Derrick Kuzak outlined last year when announcing EcoBoost. When the cost of various fuel saving technologies is factored in, the payback period for hybrids are by far the longest, with diesels being shorter and then technology like EcoBoost being the shortest. If it were our money, the Fusion/Milan we want would be powered by the combination of a 1.6L EcoBoost four with dual-clutch transmission and start/stop that we saw in the Lincoln Concept C at this year's Detroit Auto Show. That powertrain would virtually match the 40-mpg fuel consumption potential of this hybrid at a considerably lower cost and no reduction in trunk space. Ford could probably offer that car in the low $20k range, virtually matching the VW Jetta TDI in price. But that car doesn't exist. Yet.

Introduced at the Detroit Auto Show this year, the Stirling Moss will be the very last iteration of the McLaren SLR line. Its striking lines seem to illicit a love-it-or-hate-it reaction, but no one can argue that Mercedes-Benz didn't come up with something unique as a send off to its flagship model. Not that you can buy one anyway – only 75 are planned for production and will only be offered to the most loyal of SLR customers. So what does 750,000 euros get you? In addition to the unique body and interior, each car comes with M-B's bread-and-butter supercharged V8 pumping out 650 horsepower plus the ability to go 200+ mph without so much as a windshield protecting you from bugs at triple digit speeds. Sounds like a pretty good deal to us. Still can't decide if the McLaren SLR Stirling Moss is your style?
