Heikki Kovalainen joins Vodafone McLaren Mercedes

Heikki Kovalainen

“We had a number of options open to us and as always we want to make sure that we have the most competitive driver line-up and I think that Lewis and Heikki will be a formidable combination,” said Martin Whitmarsh. “Both enjoyed great rookie seasons in 2007 and share a genuine passion for winning and being the best. Heikki made a strong impression and Lewis’ performance so far has been outstanding and speaks for itself. I am confident that they will push each other on track and work well together off track.

Norbert Haug, Vice President, Mercedes-Benz Motorsport commented: “Heikki is a talented driver who showed his skills during his debut season in Formula 1 this year. Heikki’s most impressive performance was at the Japanese Grand Prix at Fuji where he finished second behind Lewis in extremely treacherous wet conditions. He is not only a quick driver but also one of the most consistent having finished in every Grand Prix except the last which puts him in the top five together with our drivers who covered most laps in 2007. Everybody in the team is looking forward to a very fruitful co-operation. Lewis and Heikki will form one of the youngest driver line-ups, and I am convinced that both will be very strong and at the same time co-operative competitors.”

26-year-old Heikki, who made his Formula 1 race debut last year with Renault, joins the team on a long-term contract and will commence his on-track programme in early January.

“I am so excited to join a team like Vodafone McLaren Mercedes,” said Heikki. “So far I have been blown away by the dedication and commitment to winning which is clear through the entire organisation and I am really excited about our joint future. As a Finn it’s an honour for me to follow in Mika and Kimi’s footsteps. I haven’t really spent a lot of time with Lewis so far but from what I know I think we will work well together and do our best for the team.”

Lewis who enjoyed the most successful rookie season in the history of the Formula 1 World Championship with consecutive podiums in his first nine races is looking forward to the 2008 season.

“As soon as the chequered flag went in Brazil I began to count down the days until Australia,” said Lewis. “I am really looking forward to 2008 and working with Heikki as my team mate. Together with the team we will do everything we can to ensure that our Championship challenge is as strong and focused as possible. My first year in Formula 1 was incredible and I was so fortunate to spend it with Vodafone McLaren Mercedes and I hope that Heikki will enjoy his first year with the team as much as I did mine.”

The Vodafone McLaren Mercedes MP4-23 is scheduled to commence its on-track testing programme at an exclusive test at the Jerez circuit in Spain during the second week of January 2008. There are currently no plans for a launch presentation but the team will provide the media with photographs and further details about the car when it runs.

Need Four-Wheel Drive?

A four-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive vehicle is one in which the engine powers all four wheels either part of the time or all of the time. Most cars have two-wheel drive, which means either the front or back wheels are powered by the engine.

Four-wheel drive, which we'll refer to as 4WD, is optional on many SUVs and there are pluses and minuses to this pricey and complex feature.

If you already know the difference between driveline types, but are unsure as to which best suits your needs, you can read Four-Wheel Drive Demystified on the ForbesAutos.com/cars.com co-branded site to find out more.

As the chart below illustrates, SUVs with 4WD drive are more expensive than their two-wheel-drive counterparts.

Top 10 Luxury Cars for woman

Thelma and Louise sought top-down glory in a light blue ’66 Ford Thunderbird convertible. Carol Brady settled for a Plymouth station wagon, an eminently practical choice — and about as exciting as a soft-boiled egg. The luxury vehicles with the highest percentage of women drivers today aren’t at either of these extremes. Rather, they’re some of the most well-balanced cars out there, from a shapely, sporty BMW roadster to a quartet of safe yet chic Volvos.

“The common denominator with most of the vehicles on this list is that they’re all sophisticated, refined vehicles with complex surfacing and highly-evolved design,” says Imre Molnar, dean of the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Mich., where he runs one of the world’s largest transportation design programs.

Molnar calls out the “flame surfacing” that chief BMW designer Chris Bangle employed — sometimes controversially — when creating the BMW Z4, which heads up our list of the top 10 luxury cars driven by women. The Z4's body blends convex and concave shapes inspired by a flame. When designing the car, Bangle even commissioned a group of dancers so that he could model the roadster's form in part based on their spontaneous body movements. "Women are responding to this fluid, organic, inspired form,” Molnar says.

Besides sophistication, women are also looking for subtlety. “I think women have such a good eye for detail,” says Vicki Vlachakis, designer of the Saturn Sky, which is popular with women, according to CNW Marketing Research data, but isn't on our list because it's not a luxury car. “The attention to detail is really important on the interior; on all of the key driving interfaces such as the gauges, shifter area, steering wheel and seats.”

Styling and aesthetics alone won't win women over, though. “To put it bluntly, women are more practical than men when it comes to cars,” says Art Spinella of CNW Marketing Research. “Whereas men tend to buy cars that are more testosterone-based and macho [see our men's list], women are into cars that are sophisticated and sensible.” The Lexus IS, which ranks 10th, offers strong performance from two available V6 engines, but still returns decent gas mileage at an estimated average of 27 mpg for combined city/highway driving in the IS 250. Likewise the sporty BMW Z4, which cranks out more than 200 hp but gets 30 mpg on the highway.

Most Extravagant Car

From a foot-long sterling silver Bentley replica that costs more than some luxury cars to a $13,300 Audi pedal car for the kids, there's a car-related gift even for those who have everything.

Take, for example, Bentley's $55,000 Blower Model, a foot-long replica of a 1920s-era Bentley painstakingly rendered from sterling silver. Sure, springing for $395 Bentley cuff links would have been impressive, but let's face it, they aren't available in a limited edition of 10 like the Blower Model, and nor do they take 20 weeks for delivery. So get your order in now for next year. It's the kind of gift that says, "I could have bought you a Mercedes-Benz E-Class, but they're simply too common."

Bentley fans aren't the only ones who can be spoiled. Aston Martin devotees who consider the sexy British cars to be art will appreciate a photograph of their favorite model juxtaposed with work by Anselm Kiefer, Jean Nouvel, or Tony Cragg, among other noted artists. Pricing for a framed print of any of the pieces comes in at just under $7,000.

Hummer HX Concept

TheThree new GM designers - David Rojas, Min Young Kang and Robert Jablonski, were given the opportunity by the American carmaker to create a concept vehicle for the Hummer brand that will debut at the 2008 Detroit Show in January. According to GM’s press release, the E-85 FlexFuel capable HUMMER HX “embodies the off road spirit of HUMMER in a fully customizable package”.

Among other features, the HX gets a pair of removable roof panels above the driver and front passenger and a modular, removable rear roof assembly enabling a quick conversion from closed vehicle to open vehicle SUT
In its final concept form, the E-85 FlexFuel capable HUMMER HX embodies the off road spirit of HUMMER in a fully customizable package. The HX offers an open-air driving experience via a pair of removable roof panels above the driver and front passenger and a modular, removable rear roof assembly enabling a quick conversion from closed vehicle to open vehicle SUT. It also features a slant back assembly with removable doors and fender flairs.

“Working as a team, you realize it’s more than one person influencing the vehicle,” said Rojas. “You can see the inspiration from each of our designs in the final concept vehicle. We’re all proud to have the chance to see our sketches become reality.”

2008 MotoGP entry list: Stoner #1

2008 MotoGP

The provisional entry list for the 2008 MotoGP World Championship has confirmed that Casey Stoner intends to ride with the #1 plate next season.

The 22-year-old Australian claimed his and Ducati's first premier-class crown wearing the #27, but will - like Nicky Hayden before him - defend the title with the world champion's digit.

The #1 plate was absent from MotoGP from 2001-2005, when champion Valentino Rossi chose to retain his famous #46. The last rider to successfully defend the 500cc/MotoGP world title with the #1 was Mick Doohan in 1998. As expected, Hayden will return to the #69 for 2008.

Stoner's fellow Australian, Chris Vermeulen, will also change his racing number next year - the Rizla Suzuki star switching to a Barry Sheene inspired #7, which was previously taken by Carlos Checa.

Of the four class rookies, double World Superbike champion James Toseland will stick with his familiar #52, while double 250cc champion Jorge Lorenzo will revert to his old #48. Alex de Angelis will run the #3, last used in the class by Max Biaggi, while Andrea Dovizioso has inherited the #4 previously used by Alex Barros.

The entry list also confirms that Team Roberts is yet to secure its MotoGP future, while Ilmor - which disappeared from the grid after the opening round of 2007 - shows no signs of attempting a return. There are thus currently only 18 confirmed riders.

The only new title sponsors to appear on the list are Alice, which has acquired the naming rights for d'Antin Ducati, and Scot, which has merged with JiR to run Dovizioso.

Toyota Aygo Platinum Edition

Toyota Aygo

There is no more exclusive Aygo than the new Platinum, a version of Toyota’s award-winning city car that is brimful of premium quality features. But while the specification is high, the price tag marks the model down as an ideal New Year bargain.

On sale from January, Toyota Aygo Platinum benefits from £1,555-worth of additional equipment beyond the range-topping Aygo+, yet the price premium is just an extra £550. No maths degree is required to work out that that’s a deal worth more than £1,000 for every customer.

Luxurious features provided as standard include Alcantara and leather upholstery, leather trim for the steering wheel and gear knob and 14-inch Turbine alloy wheels with locking nuts. There is also Crystal Silver metallic paint – now exclusive to the Platinum model.

These items are in addition to the regular Aygo+ specification, which includes six airbags, electric front windows, tilt-adjusting steering column, remote central locking, removable rear parcels shelf, six-speaker sound system with CD player and AUX-in socket for connecting portable audio equipment, 50:50 split-folding rear seats and body colour-matched door handles.

Toyota Aygo

Toyota Aygo Platinum is available in both three and five-door body styles, powered by Toyota’s ultra-fuel efficient 1.0 VVT-i petrol engine, which gives an official 61.4mpg in combined cycle driving. CO2 emissions of 109g/km mean that Toyota Aygo Platinum costs owners just £35 a year in Vehicle Excise Duty. A five-speed manual gearbox is standard, but optional MultiMode clutchless transmission can be selected, in conjunction with optional air conditioning.

On-the-road prices are £7,995 for the three-door model and £8,245 for the five-door.

FIA declares spy row closed

FIA declares spy row closed

Biggest controversy of 2007 finally comes to an end

Following on from McLaren's letter of apology to the FIAover the ‘Spygate' saga that has rocked Formula 1in 2007, the sport's governing body has seemingly moved to officially bring an end to the matter.

McLaren, Ferrariand Renaulthave all been implicated in the row, with the former being fined a sporting record $100 million USD and excluded from the 2007 world constructors' standings back in September. The Woking-based outfit's 2008 contender was also due to be heavily scrutinised before being cleared to compete in next year's championship.

In its 13 September decision, the World Motor Sport Council (WMSC) had instructed the FIA technical department to ‘conduct an investigation of the preparatory work by McLarenon its 2008 car with a view to determining whether that car incorporates any Ferrari confidential information, and report back before the WMSC meeting of December 2007'.

Now, however, it appears the issue may finally have been put to bed, following the FIA's response to McLaren's apology [click here].

An official FIA statement read:

‘In the light of McLaren's public apology and undertakings, the FIA President has asked the members of the World Motor Sport Council for their consent to cancel the hearing scheduled for 14 February 2008 and, in the interests of the sport, to consider this matter closed.'

McLaren apologise over spy saga

McLaren apologise

Woking concern makes formal apology to governing body over 'Spygate' saga.

In a letter to the sport's governing body, McLarenhas admitted that more Ferrariinformation had infiltrated the team than had at first been realised or revealed.

The Woking-based outfit was fined a sporting record $100 million USD for having been found in possession of confidential Ferrari data earlier this year, and excluded from the 2007 constructors' championship at a World Motor Sport Council hearing in September.

With its 2008 car now due to be heavily scrutinised by the FIAbefore being cleared to race in case it is deemed to contain any influences from Maranello, McLaren has taken the step of writing to the governing body to apologise over the matter – one that has rocked the sport to its core – and insist it will offer its full co-operation in any upcoming inspections.

A statement on the team's official website reads as follows:

‘As a result of the investigations carried out by the Fédération Internationale de l'Automobile, it has become clear that Ferrari information was more widely disseminated within McLaren than was previously communicated. McLaren greatly regrets that its own investigations did not identify this material, and has written to the World Motor Sport Council to apologise for this.

‘McLaren has written a letter to the FIA, which in the interests of transparency it is publishing with this press statement. That letter speaks for itself, and the sentiments expressed in it are sincerely held by McLaren. McLaren has also written to the World Motor Sport Council to apologise that it has taken an FIA investigation to find this information, and have expressed our deep regret that our understanding of the facts was improved as a result of the FIA inspection rather than our own investigations.

McLarenhas recognised that this entire situation could have been avoided if we had informed Ferrariand the FIAabout Nigel Stepney's first communication when it came to our attention. We are, of course, embarrassed by the successive disclosures, and have apologised unreservedly to the FIA World Motor Sport Council.

‘To avoid even the possibility of Ferrari information influencing our performance during 2008, McLaren has offered a set of detailed undertakings to the FIA which will impose a moratorium on development in relation to three separate systems. During the course of these incidents, McLaren has conducted a thorough review of its policies and procedures regarding the recruitment and management of staff. The proposals arising from this thorough review have been disclosed to the FIA, and McLaren has agreed to demonstrate that all of these policies and procedures have been fully implemented.

‘McLaren wish to make a public apology to the FIA, Ferrari, the Formula 1community and to Formula 1 fans throughout the world, and offer their assurance that changes are now being made which will ensure that nothing comparable to what has taken place will ever happen again. McLaren have also agreed to pay the costs incurred by the FIA for their investigation.

‘McLaren now wishes to put these matters behind it and to move forward focusing on the 2008 season

Schumacher - Germany’s fastest taxi driver?

Schumacher

Being seven-times world champion is not an excuse for taking taxi by time to time. The problem is that the way others drive might not please you that much; after all you are one of the fastest man on Earth. Yes, we are talking about Michael Schumacher. He needed to take a taxi like any other person, but he asked the driver, very politely, to allow him driving. And how seeing Schumacher driving is the biggest dream for person dream, the cab driver set on the right seat during the journey.

But why did Schumacher needed a taxi in the first place? Relax there was no big emergency! Just a puppy! Yes, a puppy! Schumacher flew into the aerodrome at the Bavarian town of Coburg on Saturday and took the taxi to the village of Gehuelz, 30 kilometres away, to pick up a new puppy - an Australian Shepherd dog called "Ed". And he wasn’t alone: his wife and his two children were with him.

Tuncer Yilmaz, the cab driver, said: "I found myself in the passenger seat, which was strange enough, but to have "Schumi" behind the wheel of my cab was incredible."

And if you consider that at the end of the journey Tuncer took a nice tip (on top of the 60 euros (88 US dollars) fare, he was also given a 100 euros (146 US dollars)), we can say that it was indeed a good day for him!

18-karat gold Volkswagen Beetle

18-karat gold Volkswagen Beetle

The Luxury Car Show held in Bucharest, Romania during last week-end is an auto show dedicated only to the luxury car makers. There’s no wonder why in only three days of show they sold cars valued at almost 7 million euro.

But this year next to makers like Mercedes, Bentley and Rolls Royce, Volkswagen brought a shiny Beetle, and we mean literally. The model was a 1968 and the company covered it in 18-karat gold.

The Beetle is already considered a golden car in automobile history, but this time Volkswagen decided to put the "golden" value in reality.

The car is priced at 60.000 euro, or $88,000. So, if you are a really jewelry lover and a Beetle fan this is the perfect solution for you. Or maybe a Christmas gift for your wife.

Chevrolet Malibu - 2008 Best Redesigned Vehicle

Chevrolet Malibu

Kelley Blue Book the leading provider of new and used vehicle information, announces the Chevrolet Malibu as the winner of the "2008 Best Redesigned Vehicle" award. According to the kbb.com editorial team, the newly redesigned 2008 Chevrolet Malibu is being honored for taking the important mid-size car category to a new level of overall refinement. Specifically, its stylish sheetmetal, attractive interior, well-sorted ride-and-handling characteristics and quiet — all in a very affordable vehicle — combined to produce a value equation that set it apart from the pack.

More than 30 vehicles were redesigned for the 2008 model year. Kelley Blue Book’s kbb.com editorial team reviewed the complete list to identify vehicles that demonstrated the greatest improvement relative to their predecessors and competitors. Factoring into the final decision were judgments on exterior and interior styling, technology, comfort and convenience features, performance/capability, driving dynamics, safety, fuel economy, overall refinement and value. A major factor contributing to the Malibu’s 2008 win is the vehicle’s market significance.

"The 2008 Malibu solidified its case for kbb.com’s ’2008 Best Redesigned Vehicle’ with a top-to-bottom, inside-and-out remake that’s nothing less than game-changing," said Jack R. Nerad, executive editorial director and executive market analyst for Kelley Blue Book and kbb.com. "The new Malibu has earned its place at the top of one of the toughest and most competitive categories in the industry. It can take on any competitor head-to-head."

Chevrolet Malibu

Rounding out the top 10 finalists for kbb.com’s "2008 Best Redesigned Vehicle" were (in alphabetical order) the Audi TT, Cadillac CTS, Honda Accord, Infiniti G37, Mercedes-Benz C-Class, Mitsubishi Lancer, Porsche Cayenne, Saturn Vue and Toyota Highlander.

"As we’ve come to expect in recent years, each vehicle on this year’s list of finalists represents a huge step forward versus its predecessor," said Nerad. "The presence of the CTS and Vue along with the Malibu marks a significant resurgence in product offerings from the domestic manufacturers. The domestics have proven they can play in the big leagues again with no excuses."

Driving off in iconic, head-turning vehicles like the 2008 New Beetle and New Beetle convertible just got easier with new option packages from Volkswagen. The New Beetle sedan now is available in a well-equipped base model “S” as well as the “SE” model with premium sound, heated front seats and heated windshield washer nozzles.

The New Beetle convertible is available in Black, Laser Blue, Gecko Green, Salsa Red, Harvest Moon and Sunflower Yellow. The sedan also is available in Platinum Gray and Reflex Silver. New 16-inch alloy wheels are available on the “S,” and 17-inch alloy wheels are available on the “SE.”

The 2008 New Beetle and New Beetle convertible are available at Volkswagen dealers now, with a starting price of $17,365 for the hard-top and $23,125 for the soft-top. From the sides, a character line plays off the fenders and a relatively flat mid-body and presents a “hunkered down” look. Black roof trim now frames the familiar silhouette.

As you would expect from Volkswagen, the interior of the car has been given thorough attention. The newest interpretation of the iconic interior includes a single-bezel instrument cluster housing a large, easy-to-read, 140 mile-per-hour speedometer and a smaller tachometer and fuel gauge. Chrome accents enhance the instrument cluster and the dashboard air vents.

Revised stitching on the V-Tex seating results in a new look. In a nod to the importance that New Beetle and New Beetle convertible drivers place on their music, Volkswagen designers have placed the auxiliary input jack in a more visible location in the center console.

2008 Volkswagen Beetle

A two-speed windshield wiper system features a four-speed intermittent wipe feature. A large assist handle across the instrument panel above the glove box and two rear-passenger assist straps located on the B-pillar on hardtop models ensure interior comfort.

The 2008 New Beetle and New Beetle convertible are offered with the advanced Volkswagen 2.5-liter, in-line, five-cylinder gasoline engine. The 2.5 L engine delivers 150 horsepower at 5,000 rpm and 170 lbs.-ft. of torque at 3,750 rpm.

With four valves per cylinder, aluminum alloy cross flow heads and double overhead camshafts, the engine is strong, quiet, and efficient. Hydraulic lifters are maintenance-free. Digital electronic ignition and Motronic sequential multi-point fuel injection help the engine to operate on regular unleaded gasoline.

Power is delivered to the front wheels with two types of transmissions. A fivespeed manual transmission operates smoothly with a hydraulic clutch. An available sixspeed transmission with Tiptronic® allows for both automatic and driver-selected gear changes using the gear selector. The 2008 New Beetle and New Beetle convertible with automatic transmission achieve an EPA-estimated fuel efficiency of up to 29 miles per gallon in highway driving and 20 mpg in city driving. With a manual transmission, the EPA estimates are 28 mpg highway and 20 on the city cycle.

Independent front McPherson struts, a torsion beam rear axle and front and rear stabilizer bars combine for a comfortable ride and excellent handling. Power-assisted rack and pinion steering and four-wheel disc brakes increase control—not to mention pure driving pleasure.

For four-season fun, the New Beetle convertible features a three-layer cloth top with a heated glass rear window. An extra window switch on convertible models allows the driver to lower and raise all of the side windows simultaneously. The modern top helps keep road noise out in the “up” or closed position. Lowering the top is easy, and it piles neatly behind the rear seat in original Beetle fashion.

2010 BMW X3 II

2010 BMW X3 II

BMW will launch the next generation X3 in 2010. BMW will move the production of its X3 SUV from Austria to South Carolina, USA. Next to its standard competitors, like Touareg, the 2010 X3 will get a new competitor starting 2009 when Mercedes will launch the GLK, but also the all new Infiniti EX.

To be built on the same 3-Series platform like the current model (but stretched and widened to help differentiate it from the 3-series wagon), the 2010 X3 will get an all-new exterior and new engines under the hood.

As BMW confirmed, the CS Concept will inspire all the future models, and the X3 is no exception. It will get a new front fascia (inspired by the CS), with a large prominent grille, redesigned headlamps and a slightly redesigned rear end. The air intakes on the lower bumper will be shared with the future X6 and will also likely become a future design cue for BMW activity vehicles.

The interior in the next X3 will also see a major upgrade, using high-tech materials and also offering more space for the passengers.

Spy photographers report that the 2010 model will have a redesigned suspension setup compared to the current X3.

Under the hood we will see the same engine range with just a few exceptions. It is expected that the 2.5i version to be dropped just because 160 hp won’t be enough for a future SUV (we have to consider that the Infiniti EX has an output of 290 hp and the GLK starting from 228 hp). Instead BMW will add the powerful twin-turbo 3.0 liter engine used in the 335i.

BMW will produce the 2010 X3 at the Spartanburg’s plan, South Carolina, USA in a number of 50.000 units a year

Mercedes GLK-Class

Mercedes GLK-Class

Known only by the internal development code, 204 SUT, the new Mercedes-Benz compact SUV will be called the GLK-Class, following the logic of the other compact vehicles in the range (SLK, CLK) inspired by larger models (SL, CL). “K” stands for “kurz”, meaning “short” in German.

Following the latest tendencies in the SUV construction, same as the latest ML-Class, the new model will use a unitary body construction, rather than a separate chassis, like those used on high-performance off-roaders. Inspired by the BMW X3, the GLK will most likely be oriented towards the ’sport’ rather than the ’utility’ end of the SUV market. And that end is the one to attract most buyers these days, as statistics show that SUV owners rarely use them in off-road.

The GLK is expected to feature the more potent engine of the C-Class, including the new four-valve 3.0-liter and 3.5-liter V-6s as well as a supercharged four cylinder and a CDI turbo diesel. As any other model in the range, the MLK is likely to feature an AMG version, featuring the V8 engine known from the C55AMG.

The GLK-class is expected to be assembled in Bremen at a yearly production rate of 40.000 units starting with 2008. Expected base price is around $46,000.

Infiniti EX35

Infiniti EX35

The all-new 2008 Infiniti EX35, which goes on sale at Infiniti retailers nationwide in late December 2007, offers an exceptional combination of seductive design, elegant interior and advanced technology systems – including the world production car debut of the advanced Around View Monitor (AVM) system, which utilizes four small cameras to give the driver a “top-down view” of the outside of the vehicle while parking.

Every 2008 Infiniti EX35 comes standard with a fourth-generation VQ35HR 3.5-liter V6 engine (shared with the new G35 Sedan), rated at 290-plus horsepower (estimated) and 5-speed automatic transmission with manual mode, DS sport mode with Downshift Rev Matching (DRM), and Adaptive Shift Control.

The engine block features ladder frame construction, variable exhaust cam timing (eCVTCS), asymmetric piston skirts, twin knock sensors and Iridium spark plugs. Its symmetric twin ram air intake system helps reduce airflow resistance, while the dual exhaust system has been designed with equal length exhaust manifolds and reduced muffler exhaust pressure help improve engine breathing.

Volkswagen Touareg

Volkswagen Touareg

Volkswagen of America launched the restyled Touareg 2, one of the world’s most successful premium SUVs to a new plateau. No small feat for a vehicle that has set records – from the highest volcanic peaks in Chile to the dunes of the legendary Dakar Rally. The Touareg 2 is a masterpiece of German engineering for adventure lovers seeking the most capable on- or off-road vehicle built with the driving dynamics and value only Volkswagen can deliver.

A completely redesigned front end demonstrates the extent of the changes on Touareg 2. The new Touareg 2 now is instantly recognizable as a member of the Volkswagen family, with its new stylized front grille — chrome on V6 FSI and matte chrome on V8 FSI and V10 TDI — with chrome eyebrows standard on all models. A redesigned front bumper, new side mirrors with improved airflow, and sleek, new organically shaped headlamp housings with polycarbonate lens covers further distinguish the Touareg 2 from its predecessor.

The changes continue to the rear of the vehicle, where a new roof edge spoiler sharpens the look, improves aerodynamics, and aids fuel efficiency. The brake light housings have an improved LED lighting visual effect and feature a sporty new dark “glazing” treatment. Below the rear bumper, but not forgotten, the exhaust system tailpipes also have been massaged for a fresh new look.

Fiat Linea wins the "Autobest 2008" prize

Fiat Linea

After winning “Car of The Year 2008” with the Fiat 500, “Carro do Ano 2008” with the Fiat Grande Punto and other prestigious international awards, the Fiat brand has now brought home the coveted "AUTOBEST 2008" prize with the Fiat Linea. The electors were an international jury of 15 specialist journalists representing 15 European countries containing a total of about 300 million inhabitants: Bulgaria, Cyprus, Croatia, Greece, Macedonia, Poland, Czech Republic, Romania, Russia, Serbia, Slovakia, Slovenia, Turkey, Ukraine and Hungary.

The Fiat Linea placed first with 850 points, ahead of the Kia Cee’d (784), the Mazda 2 (705), the Skoda Fabia (679) and the Toyota Auris (583). Under the terms of the "AUTOBEST" award, the jury selects the winner from a shortlist of 5 finalists on the basis of 13 parameters that include design, comfort, economic running, driveability, price and value for money. Each member of the jury has a total of 240 points to distribute among the 5 cars and there is a ceiling of votes for each parameter.

Fiat Linea

The "AUTOBEST 2008" prize provides further confirmation of the acclaim with which Europe has welcomed the Fiat Linea, a three-box segment C saloon that offers original styling, functionality and driving pleasure as well as a very competitive price/content ratio.

Conceived within the orbit of Tofas A.S., the 50/50 joint-venture between Fiat Auto and Ko Holding quoted on the Istanbul Stock Exchange, the new car is manufactured in the Turkish factory of Bursa and marketed in a number of European and extra-European countries: from Spain to Germany, from Morocco to Finland. And starting next year, the Fiat Linea will also be produced and marketed in Brazil, China, Russia and India.

The new model was designed by the Fiat Style Centre and presents an elegantly dynamic external line with a distinctly Italian flavour to target an international market. Backed by an extraordinary stylistic heritage, the Fiat Linea is a gracefully elegant 4-door vehicle, that comes with generous dimensions that set it at the top of its segment: 4.56 m long, 1.73 m wide, 1.5 m tall and a wheelbase of 2.6 m, in addition to a sizeable luggage compartment of 500 litres

HUMMER HX concept to be unveiled at 2008 Detroit Auto Show

HUMMER HX

Scheduled for introduction at the 2008 North American International Auto Show, the HUMMER HX concept reflects the innovative minds of three new GM designers - David Rojas, Min Young Kang and Robert Jablonski - whose first assignment was to provide a vision for the future design of off-road vehicles. Fresh out of the College for Creative Studies in Detroit, Mich., the designers’ first test in GM was to design a fun, nimble and innovative HUMMER concept.

“HUMMER appeals to young people globally and served as a perfect first assignment for our newest talent,” said Ed Welburn, vice president of global design and product planning. “Today’s graduates from top design schools are ready to hit the ground running. The HUMMER design challenge gave our newest designers an opportunity to sprint.”

The task presented numerous challenges to the new designers, from creating a vehicle for a brand known around the globe for its iconic design, to ensuring the model would live up to the market’s expectation of HUMMER off-road capability.

To help ensure designs were true to the HUMMER brand, these designers were given limited design direction by Carl Zipfel, an ex-professional motocross racer and director of the HUMMER design studio.

“Carl definitely set the tone,” said Rojas. “While he gave us creative liberty and challenged us to develop innovative ideas, he also defined three HUMMER proportions – wheelbase, approach and departure angles, and stance – and assigned one to each of us. It gave us a chance to collaborate, but also take our own direction.”

While sketching and sculpting together in the HUMMER studio, these recent graduates drew upon the creative energy of each other, further improving their individual designs, as well as that of the final concept.

“We drew inspiration from one another,” said Kang. “As you’re designing and sketching you try to absorb what the other designer is doing and try to make it better.”

David, Min Young and Robert’s collaboration inspired the HUMMER HX concept, which presents extraordinary efficiency without sacrificing the unique essence of the HUMMER brand, the world’s most capable off-road vehicles.

“While we took inspiration from the HUMMER heritage and DNA, we each wanted to evolve it in a new way,” said Jablonski. “We agreed it should be contemporary, compact and definitely open air. It came out great.”

After three months of sketching and sculpting theme work for the new HUMMER concept, each designer had the opportunity to present scale clay models to Bob Lutz, GM vice chairman and Ed Welburn, who chose which design would ultimately become the HX concept.

Ferrari’s Dino

Ferrari’s Dino

Despite being conceived more than two years ago, the whole project only got the green light in September, and is scheduled to be unveiled at a major motor show in 2009.

It's the supercar scoop of the year! Auto Express has had exclusive access to insider details and can now reveal all the details of the Italian legend’s most important new model of the decade. Yes, the Dino is back!

Taking the latter part of its name from Enzo Ferrari’s son, our contacts are confident that the eventual title will be ‘420 Dino’, with the number referring to the V8 engine’s size.

Back in Italy, one fierce debate is still raging between Ferrari, Pininfarina – the car’s designer – and Ferrari’s owner, Fiat. While all indicators still lean toward the Dino being a coupé-cabriolet with a folding hard-top, some bosses would prefer to launch the entry-level model as a berlinetta hard-top GTB first, followed soon after by a targa GTS.

This would follow the trend set by the 246 Dino GT and GTS from 1968 and 1971, and the 308 GTB and GTS from 1975 and 1977.

Future Mercedes SL-Class renderings

 Mercedes SL-Class

The latest issue of the Autobild magazine features a few renderings of the future Mercedes SL-Class. And if it’s to consider that Autobild is al the time very close to the real car, we might have a pretty good idea of how the production car will look. Not bad at all!

The engines on the future SL will start from the V6 with 272 hp in the SL 350 and will go up to a V12 with 517 hp in the SL 600. The AMG version, SL 63 AMG will have an output of 525 hp. The SL 65 AMG will deliver around 612 hp.

Audi wins two "red dot design awards"

Audi

This year, AUDI AG has won two prestigious “red dot awards: communication design” in the category of dialog marketing. Design Zentrum Nordrhein Westfalen in Essen paid tribute yesterday to Audi’s creative agency gingco.net for the outstanding design of the Audi mailings.

The awards were made for the mailing campaigns for the presales phase of the Audi A5 and Audi S5, and for the market launch of the Audi R8. In its A5 mailing, Audi said goodbye to its customary catalog format, surprising readers with a high-quality, semi-transparent photo folder. What was so convincing about the Audi R8 mailing was an innovatively folded box containing an elaborately designed brochure about the super sports car.

“Audi is the leading automobile brand when it comes to design – in choosing an Audi, you’re choosing the utmost in design quality,” says Peter Zieten, Head of Communication Germany at AUDI AG. “We are pursuing the high demands that we place upon design and the language of form in all aspects of brand management. Winning two 2007 red dot awards once again demonstrates that we are setting the standard in brand communication,” stresses Zieten.

The red dot design award is one of the most prestigious honors on the worldwide design scene and has been given since 1955 by the Design Center in Essen to reward innovative, quality design. This year, the jury of twelve international design experts received over 7,000 entries from 34 countries in the categories of “red dot award: product design,” “red dot award: communication design” and “red dot award: design concept.” The winners and their clients will be featured in the “red dot communication design yearbook 2007/2008” and presented at a special exhibition to be held at the red dot design museum in Essen
