Pontiac G8 sport truck

Pontiac G8 sport truck

At the New York Auto Show, next to the G8 GXP, Pontiac will also display the sport truck version of the G8. Based on the all-new Pontiac G8 performance sedan, the newest member of the G8 family has a longer wheelbase and a cargo bed suitable for either work or recreation. The G8 sport truck significantly stretches Pontiac’s commitment to style and performance and is expected to arrive in dealers’ showrooms in late 2009.

The sport truck draws its strength from the same powerful 6.0L V-8 engine used in the G8 GT. It puts out 361 hp and 385 lb.-ft. of torque. The combination of a six-speed automatic transmission and Active Fuel Management technology provides both car-like fuel economy and an unexpected 0-to-60 time of 5.4 seconds.

The G8 sport truck is based on the same rear-wheel-drive architecture as the G8 performance sedan. However, the sport truck’s body structure was reinforced in key areas to support its cargo and towing duties. More than 60 new components were added to strengthen the structure. Compared to the sedan, the 118.5-inch (3,009 mm) wheelbase is approximately four inches longer and the overall length is six inches longer.

Press release

The 2010 Pontiac G8 sport truck blurs the line between cars and trucks and is creating an all-new segment in the North American car market. This dramatically different vehicle blends the sporty handling of a performance coupe with the cargo capabilities of a light truck.

“Pontiac has never shied away from offering segment-defining vehicles, going back to the original GTO,” said Jim Bunnell, Buick-Pontiac-GMC general manager. “There’s simply nothing else like the G8 sport truck on the road today, and we definitely believe that there are customers who will be excited by its distinctive design, performance and cargo capabilities.”
Consumer named

Another unique aspect of this new vehicle is the fact that it will be named by a consumer. Beginning today (March 15, 2008), consumers can visit www.pontiac.com/namethiscar and submit their name ideas. “As an important part of the G8 family, we know that ‘sport truck’ doesn’t fully describe the vehicle’s ability to blur the lines between sports car and truck,” said Craig Bierley, Pontiac marketing director. “Because its fans will surely be as unique as the vehicle itself, we’re giving them a voice in selecting a name that reflects its appeal.” The winning entry will be announced April 15.
Design

The G8 sport truck maintains the same sporty exterior design as its namesake sedan. Flared fenders wrap around the 18-inch wheels and give it a wide, confident stance. The roofline has a coupe-like profile that reflects the vehicle’s performance pedigree.

The doors, roof and exterior panels aft of the B-pillars are unique from the G8 sedan. One-piece outer body panels give the vehicle a sleek appearance. Wrap-around taillamps and fully concealed tailgate hinges add to the sculpted look. A color-coordinated, soft tonneau cover conceals and protects items in the cargo bed from the weather.
Performance

The sport truck draws its strength from the same powerful 6.0L V-8 engine used in the G8 GT. It puts out 361 horsepower (270 kW) and 385 lb.-ft. (522 Nm) of torque. The combination of a six-speed automatic transmission and Active Fuel Management technology provides both car-like fuel economy and an unexpected 0-to-60 time of 5.4 seconds.

While these performance numbers are respectable by sports car standards, the G8 sport truck offers flexibility unlike that of a sports car. A 73.9-inch (1878 mm) cargo bed has 42.7 cubic feet (1208 L) of cargo space and a durable composite bed liner. It also can carry a payload of more than 1,074 pounds (488 kg) and tow a 3,500-pound (1,600 kg) trailer.
Structure

The G8 sport truck is based on the same rear-wheel-drive architecture as the G8 performance sedan. However, the sport truck’s body structure was reinforced in key areas to support its cargo and towing duties. More than 60 new components were added to strengthen the structure. Compared to the sedan, the 118.5-inch (3,009 mm) wheelbase is approximately four inches longer and the overall length is six inches longer.
Suspension and wheels

A four-wheel independent suspension with electronic stability control delivers confident handling, whether loaded with weekend home-improvement supplies or towing a pair of personal watercraft to the lake.

The steering box is located ahead of the front axle line for a quick, direct feel. The sport truck’s front stabilizer bar is one mm larger than the sedan, and the rear suspension has been enhanced to support payloads without adversely affecting handling.

The G8 sport truck rides on 18-inch machine-faced aluminum wheels with a P245/45R18 summer performance tire. All-season tires are available. An optional Sports Package includes 19-inch machine-faced aluminum wheels with P245/40R19 summer performance tires.
Brakes and steering

The sport truck shares the G8 GT’s four-wheel disc brake system, featuring 12.64-inch front and 12.76-inch rear rotors. Front rotor thickness is 1.0 inch, while the rear rotors are 0.87-inch thick. Twin-piston, front alloy calipers and vented rotors and single-piston, alloy rear calipers with vented rotors are standard, as is ABS.
Comfort and convenience

Given its heritage, it’s not surprising that the G8 sport truck offers many of the same creature comforts as the G8 GT, such as:

* Air conditioning with electronic dual-zone climate control
* Cruise control
* Driver Information Center
* Bluetooth connectivity
* Tilt/telescoping steering wheel with DIC and radio controls
* Power windows/locks/mirrors
* Remote keyless entry and remote start
* Theft-deterrent alarm system

Fully-bolstered, four-way adjustable cloth seats are standard. Heated, six-way leather seats are available. They can be customized with two-tone, black-and-red inserts and a coordinating gauge cluster.

Behind the seats is a surprisingly large interior cargo area with more than 8.5 cubic feet (245 liters) of storage space. There are two covered storage compartments beneath the load floor and a pair of cargo nets.
Sound system

The G8 sport truck’s 230-watt Blaupunkt AM/FM/six-disc CD changer has an MP3 input and five speakers. The 6.5-inch audio display controls both the sound and climate control systems.
Safety and security

A full list of safety features are standard, including:

* StabiliTrak electronic vehicle stability system
* Tire pressure monitoring system
* Dual-stage frontal air bags with a passenger sensing system
* Head-curtain side air bags
* Side thorax air bags
* Three-point safety belts in all seating positions
* Safety belt pretensioners
* OnStar

Press release

Today Pontiac announced the flagship of its GXP performance series, the G8 GXP high-performance sedan, at the New York Auto Show. This 2009 model will join the Solstice, G6 and Torrent GXP models in Pontiac dealerships in late 2008. The G8 GXP takes the G8’s responsive driving experience, refined passenger environment and aggressive good looks to a new level. It also delivers an enjoyable driving experience, thanks to a 6.2L V-8 that produces in excess of 400 horsepower.

“More than just raw power, the GXP delivers the sophisticated yet exciting driving experience that enthusiasts expect in a car costing far more than the GXP,” said Jim Bunnell, Buick-Pontiac-GMC general manager
Engine performance

The heart of the G8 GXP is the 6.2L LS3 small-block V-8, currently rated at 402 horsepower (300 kW)* and 402 lb.-ft. of torque (546 Nm)* pending final SAE certification. This engine is the newest member of GM’s small-block V-8 family. It features a revised, larger-bore cylinder block, high-flow, L92-style cylinder heads; larger-diameter pistons; unique camshaft and camshaft timing; revised valvetrain with offset intake rocker arms; high-flow intake manifold; and high-flow fuel injectors.

The LS3 engine has an aluminum cylinder block with cast-in-place iron cylinder liners. Larger bores help create a 376-cubic-inch displacement. The block casting also features revisions and machining in the bulkheads to enhance its strength and improve bay-to-bay breathing. New pistons were designed for high-rpm performance.

New, high-flow cylinder heads aid engine breathing and are based on the large port and valve design found on the LS7 engine and other GM L76 engines. The larger-capacity, straighter intake port-design optimizes intake flow to the combustion chamber, an effect augmented by large valves, measuring 2.16 inches (55.0 mm) on the intake side and 1.59 inches (40.4 mm) on the exhaust side.

Pending final testing, the G8 GXP is expected to deliver 0-to-60 mph performance of about 4.7 seconds, and a quarter-mile time of 13.0 seconds at 108 mph.
Six on the floor

A new six-speed Tremec TR6060 manual transmission is optional on the G8 GXP. This next-generation manual smoothly transfers the engine’s power and torque to the rear wheels with a reduction in shift throw. The transmission features a host of refinements including premium gear synchronizers; stronger gears, housing, and bell housing; a single-piece counter shaft; and machined gear teeth.

The standard Hydra-Matic six-speed 6L80 automatic transmission is technologically advanced and robust. It uses a clutch-to-clutch operation and an integrated 32-bit transmission controller to deliver smooth and precise shifts. The six-speed has a generous 6.04:1 overall ratio that enables a “steep” first-gear. The result is strong launch acceleration along with “tall” overdrive ratios that lower engine rpms for better fuel economy and reduced noise.

A 3.27 final drive ratio comes with automatic-equipped GXPs, and a 3.70 gear is matched with the manual transmission. A limited-slip differential is standard.
High-performance suspension

The G8 GXP rides on the G8’s 114.8-inch (2915 mm) wheelbase with wide front ( 62.7 inches / 1,592 mm) and rear ( 63.3 inches / 1,608 mm) tracks. The four-wheel independent suspension is fully adjustable and is tuned for the highest performance in the G8 family. The GXP’s ride and handling was developed and validated on racetracks and highways around the world, including the famed Nuremberg Ring. It rewards the driver with sharp, immediate responses, as well as a well-balanced road feel during spirited driving.

The suspension employs a MacPherson strut design in the front and a four-link, coil-over-shock design in the rear. A direct-acting front stabilizer bar, decoupled rear stabilizer bar and lateral ball joints on the rear suspension deliver increased lateral stiffness for more responsive handling. The front suspension features fully adjustable caster, camber and toe; the rear suspension has fully adjustable camber and toe, for more precise tuning.
Steering and brakes

The steering rate for the GXP is tuned to provide immediate response with definitive driver feedback. Like the G8 sedan and GT, the GXP’s steering box is located ahead of the front axle line for a quicker, more direct feel.

The Brembo braking system matches the GXP’s boost in performance with an equivalent increase in stopping power. The system includes 14-inch (355 mm) vented front and 12.76-inch (324 mm) rear disc rotors, with special quad-piston alloy calipers in front. The alloy calipers on the rear brakes have single-piston actuation. The four-wheel disc brake system includes standard anti-lock brakes and traction control.
Wheels and tires

The GXP rides on 19-inch polished aluminum wheels with a special machined face. Performance-oriented summer P245/40R19 tires are standard, and a comparable all-season tire is available. Combined with the suspension and steering enhancements, this setup gives the GXP exceptional cornering grip.
Exterior styling

The G8 GXP exhibits strong Pontiac design cues. A unique front fascia with a lower splitter and a distinctive rear fascia diffuser contribute to its sporty look. The dual-port grille, fog lamps, bold wheels and confident, wheels-at-the-corners stance are all unmistakably Pontiac traits.
Interior amenities and comfort

The G8 GXP’s interior is driver-oriented with aesthetic and tactile details like instruments with a sporty appearance that match the car’s performance. Interior materials consist of satin and chrome trim and high-quality textured materials throughout. The instrument cluster glows with crisp, white light on the primary instruments. Pontiac’s signature red lighting illuminates the rest of the instrument panel cluster.

Standard comfort and convenience amenities include:

* Highly bolstered two-tone sport seats with color-coordinated gauge cluster and GXP embroidery
* Leather-trimmed steering wheel and gear shifter
* Power-adjustable front seats
* Fog lamps
* Alloy sport pedals
* A 230-watt Blaupunkt audio system
* XM Satellite Radio

The seats offer firm support to hold occupants in place during aggressive cornering. The standard heated leather seats were designed to deliver excellent comfort during long drives. They are available in Ebony or an Ebony/Red two-tone.
Safety

Maintaining the G8’s tradition of a full suite of standard safety features, the G8 GXP includes:

* Four-wheel disc brakes with ABS and traction control
* Electronic stability control
* Seat-mounted thorax air bags and dual-stage frontal air bags for front passengers, with automatic passenger sensing system
* Roof rail side-impact air bags for both seating rows
* OnStar

2008 Harley-Davidson Cross Bones First Look News

he said "Recently, there's been a trend toward dark, gritty, edgy, stripped down bikes, and it has been driven by young riders," says Andy Benka, director of market outreach for Harley-Davidson. Skateboarders, snowboarders and BMX-ers, for instance, share the same rebellious, subversive characteristics found in the traditional Harley rider. "They want to ride without being hassled," Benka adds. "That's the person we want Dark Custom bikes to appeal to, and it's why we went back to building street bikes the way we did post-World War II—simple and raw."

The latest bike in the Dark Custom series is the FLSTSB Softail Cross Bones. It's got a shiny Springer front end and other post-war bobber styling cues, like a sprung solo seat, gloss black round air cleaner cover, chopped front fender and half-round rider footboards. Mini "ape hanger" handlebars drape over custom-style dual gas tanks, which are split by a glossy, black "cat-eye" console that houses the speedometer and other gauges. Halfway down the tank the chrome gives way to a hand-laced leather panel that disappears under the sprung solo seat. Fat front and rear tires give the bike a brutish stance. Even so, she's a real looker.

Nissan GT-R become as the Official “SUPER GT”

The Nissan GT-R is a high performance automobile created by Nissan, released in Japan on December 6, 2007, and expected to be released internationally by early June of 2008. Nissan and the automotive press frequently refer to the GT-R as a supercarNissan’s motorsport department had announced today that all-new GT-R coupe has been chosen to become the official safety car of the SUPER GT 2008 series, which kicks off this Sunday, March 16, 2008. A handover of the safety car will be held during the opening of the SUPER GT series (Suzuka Circuit in Mie Prefecture) on Sunday,

March 16. If you happen to be at the Suzuka Circuit, you’ll be happy to know that a series of previous GT-R racing models like the 2003 Xanavi Nismo GT-R and the 1990 Calsonic Skyline will be on display at the Grand Prix Square adjacent to the main stand.

Avro 720 Mirage Ford GT

 Avro 720 Mirage Ford GT

ust as the Ford GT becomes a legend in its own time, Avro Motor Cars, the Brooklands-based supercar specialist, has joined forces with Roush Technologies in the UK to create a further strictly limited edition of the car. The Avro 720 Mirage special edition will be limited to just 10 cars – the first of which has just been rolled out of Roush’s Technical Centre in Brentwood, Essex.

Avro engineers have applied a custom calibration package to the car, to extract a delivered, mean 720bhp at 6950rpm and a massive 627lb.ft. of torque at 4800rpm. The car is also derestricted, which gives a top speed capability in excess of 220mph.

Finished in vibrant Arancia Metallica (Italian Metallic Orange) with semi-matt black details and wheels – and exclusive sill plates and side decals, the 720 Mirage incorporates a significant range of engine and mechanical upgrades. Changes in appearance include the deletion of the rear bumper – partly to save weight – and each car will carry an exclusive numbered Avro plaque on the centre tunnel.

Central to the increased power is a larger – and polished – Whipple supercharger. The induction side of the engine also includes an Accufab throttle body and inlet sleeve. An Accufab X pipe exhaust system with ceramic-coated tips is also fitted. Other engine equipment includes a Mafia MAF sensor adaptor and a transmission breather catch tank.

The running gear on the Avro 720 Mirage has been appropriately upgraded to match the boost in power. The front and rear track is 5mm wider than the standard car. The front brakes use

AP Racing 6-pot front callipers with Stillen drilled and slotted rotors – and similar rotors are used also at the rear. The suspension has been lowered by 25mm – and uprated to include KW’s Variant 3 fully adjustable coil-over system.

Avro Managing Director, Andy McGrath says, “When we created the highly successful Roush 600RE edition, we recognised the potential in the car to go a step further. The Ford GT is already a rare and sought after motorcar and simply identifying and locating more available untitled vehicles has been a significant challenge for us. The 720 Mirage is available exclusively from Avro – and once these cars are completed, we believe there will be no more. Examples of our 600RE edition are now located in several parts of the world – and we expect the market response to the 720 Mirage to be similarly international.”

Audi fears smaller Porsche SUV may destroy Q5

sports cars

Automotive politics in full swing. As Porsche increases its stake in VW from 31 percent to more than 50 percent, its earlier plans of making a smaller SUV based on the Audi Q5 has aroused. And news is out from Ingolstadt that Audi’s board members are against this proposition as they fear it might impact Q5’s sales.

Porsche’s Chairman Wendelin Wiedeking, for many years, has been trying to strike a deal with Audi to bring out a five-seater SUV. The Q5 was what he exactly had in mind. The Porsche Cayenne and the Audi Q7 were developed and are built on a common platform. Wiedeking’s idea of making it happen again with the Q5 has apparently not pleased the board members at Audi.

The Porsche Cayenne and Audi Q7 are in their own leagues even though they share the same platform. Porsche should stop buying such lame stories and go ahead with developing their own stuff and now with the increase in their stake, it is bound to happen anytime soon. I mean, who wouldn’t want to buy a mini-Cayenne? And once they bring out one, it would definitely destroy the BMW X3.

Alfa Romeo MiTo

 Alfa Romeo MiTo

The Mi.To is the first car to be built since the 8C Competizione and will be Alfa Romeo’s most compact sports car with dimensions of just 4.06 metres long, 1.44 metres high and 1.72 metres wide. The car features three different vehicle behaviour modes based on the driving style best suited to the situation or the customer’s wishes: supersporting (Dynamic), town driving (Normal), maximum safety even in difficult grip conditions (All-Weather).

The Mi.To is the first car in its segment to offer such innovative technological content. The car comes with a range of 4 engines, all Turbo (petrol and diesel), that currently range from 90 hp up to 155 hp, with the range due to be extended by even higher power ratings. The Alfa Mi.To will presented in June this year and will then be gradually introduced from July in all the major markets.

2010 Toyota Supra renderings

2010 Toyota Supra

You knew already that the Supra will come back! But what if the future version will be powered by a 3.7-liter V6 engine with an output of 350 hp, and a twin-turbo version with 400 hp? According to Best Car magazine this will indeed happen!

The 2010 Supra will take design elements from current models, like Camry, but also from the FT-HS concept car that made its debut last year at the Detroit Auto Show. The headlights seem too ambiguously shaped for Toyota’s top tier sports car, but there are some interesting details like the double bubble canopy (reminiscent of the FD RX-7) and front end air ducts and rear fender/hip lines that seem an homage to the last generation Supra.

We just hope Toyota will actually build it! And with the future 370Z announced there will be a very interesting competition on the market

2009 Mercedes B-Class

2009 Mercedes B-Class

mercedes b-class

After three successful years, Mercedes-Benz has overhauled the design and engineering of the B-Class. The facelift programme focused on environmental compatibility, economic efficiency and comfort, with further advances being made in each of these areas. Thanks to a series of detailed improvements, the four-cylinder engines now burn up to seven percent less fuel than previously, and distinguish themselves with remarkably low exhaust emissions that undercut the current EU limits by as much as 90 percent.

Mercedes-Benz has developed a new ECO start/stop function for the high-volume B 150 and B 170 models. This switches off the engine when stopped at traffic lights, for example, producing a fuel saving of up to nine percent in practical use. Additional new developments include the bi-fuel petrol/natural-gas drive in the B 170 NGT BlueEFFICIENCY, along with active parking assist which helps drivers to both find a suitable parking spot, and then manoeuvre into it.

The B-Class continues to be available with a choice of six engines – two direct-injection diesel units (109 hp and 140 hp) delivering up to 300 Nm of torque, as well as four petrol engines with a peak power output of up to 193 hp and a maximum torque of 280 Nm. The four-cylinder power units have undergone a series of detailed improvements in order to further reduce fuel consumption.

A further new addition to the B-Class range bears the initials "NGT" on the right-hand side of its tailgate. They stand for "Natural Gas Technology" and identify a model variant which is as economical as it is environmentally compatible, courtesy of its bi-fuel drive: the B 170 NGT BlueEFFICIENCY is able to run on both natural gas and premium grade petrol while delivering an identical maximum output of 116 hp.

Since its market premiere in summer 2005, the B-Class has evolved into the blueprint for a new species of car which harmonises the benefits of various vehicle concepts: the four-door model boasts the dynamic design of a sporty saloon, the exterior dimensions of a compact car, the spaciousness of an estate, the versatility of a mini MPV and, of course, the trademark safety of a Mercedes-Benz.

The sales figures for the B-Class to date provide clear evidence that the Mercedes-Benz product planners hit the mark with a concept that caters to the motoring needs of today’s sophisticated society: since mid-2005, over 325,000 motorists around the world have been won over by the Sports Tourer.

The restyled front end injects the B-Class with even more poise and assurance than before. This is primarily down to the radiator grille with its three chromed cross fins painted in metallic grey and the Mercedes star integrated into its centre. However, the more imposing appearance of the B-Class also stems from the new-look bumper – whose design emphasises the large air intake at the bottom – as well as the modified bonnet.

Design: restyled front end creates a powerful presence

This new design idiom makes the front look broad and, as a consequence, especially powerful, symbolising the sporty attributes of the B-Class even more clearly than before. Aside from power and performance potential, these qualities include the car’s agility and its forwards thrust, something which is further underlined by the more pronounced arrow shape of the bonnet, radiator grille and bumper. This has the effect of making the entire front section appear to be surging dynamically forwards – a highly expressive styling element of the current Mercedes design idiom, which can be appreciated better than ever before in the 2008 model year version of the B-Class. The front end’s arrow shape is continued rearwards in the form of an understated but effective line running up the centre of the bonnet.

Typical distinguishing features of the current Mercedes style are also very much in evidence in the side profile of the B-Class, which presents a thrilling interplay between taut forms and crisp lines. Of particular note is the character line, which rises progressively from the front wing to the rear tail light, thereby marking an intriguing divide between the concave and convex-formed surfaces along the body’s flanks. This line furthermore underscores the body’s wedge-shaped form, and thereby gives added impact to the Sports Tourer’s athletic, powerful nature.

In the 2008 model year B-Class, the design at the sides seems even more harmonious and elegant than before because the exterior mirror housings, door handles and skirt panels are now painted to match the body colour on all model variants. The restyled hubcaps and light-alloy wheels add further touches of class to the exterior looks.

The rear styling picks up on the dynamic flow of lines at the front and along the sides. A direct visual link is created by the tail light assemblies, whose upper edges merge seamlessly with the character line along the vehicle’s sides. The tail lights sport a new high-brilliance look and draw the gaze to the large tailgate, which now comes with en ergonomically enhanced chrome handle strip. The rear bumper has been remodelled too, and includes a black-grained plastic insert on its upper face as standard which serves as a load sill guard. If the B-Class is specified with either the chrome or the sports package, this insert is made of polished stainless steel instead to add yet another gleaming highlight to the tail’s design.

Interior: high-grade appointments with new upholsteries and trims

High-class appeal, attention to detail and a sense of ample spaciousness – these qualities have always been intrinsic to the B-Class. The winning blend of forms, colours and materials teams up with the interior’s roominess, the pleasant feel of all its surface materials and the expansive window areas to produce a most inviting ambience. This is helped by the high seating position – which, incidentally, improves the driver’s view of the vehicle too – while the relatively high waistline fosters a sense of security without making the occupants feel confined in any way.

The Mercedes design team has further upgraded the interior with a new upholstery fabric, plus a new fabric pattern for the seat cushions. If the B-Class is ordered with the sports package, the side seat bolsters are trimmed in ARTICO man-made leather and the centre panels in fabric. The interior door linings likewise feature a new fabric trim.

The centre console continues to be bordered by trim strips on both sides, but they are now made from diagonally brushed aluminium in a smoke grey finish. The same, meticulously integrated trim is found again in the vicinity of the gearshift and in the door panelling, giving the interior an added sense of refinement. Such fine touches demonstrate just how much attention to detail has been invested in even the basic version of the B-Class, as well as the high standards to which it has been specified.

Diesel engines: fuel consumption reduced by a further seven percent

The B-Class continues to be available with a choice of six engines – two direct-injection diesel units (80 kW/109 hp and 103 kW/140 hp) delivering up to 300 Newton metres of torque, as well as four petrol engines with a peak power output of up to 142 kW/193 hp and a maximum torque of 280 Newton metres. The four-cylinder power units have undergone a series of detailed improvements in order to further reduce fuel consumption.

For the diesel models, this means that the combined NEDC fuel consumption

of the B 180 CDI and B 200 CDI has dropped by as much as seven percent – depending on tyre size – to 5.2 - 5.4 and 5.4 - 5.6 litres per 100 kilometres, respectively. The two turbodiesel models will therefore be an even less seldom sight at the filling station from now on; the B 180 CDI can clock up over 1000 kilometres on a single tank of fuel (54 litres).

Petrol models: new fuel-saving ECO start/stop function

Depending on the model and engine output, the four petrol variants of the B‑Class return fuel consumption figures of between 6.6 and 8.1 litres per 100 kilometres on the NEDC driving cycle. From autumn 2008, motoring is set to become even more economical with the arrival of the B 150 and B 170 BlueEFFICIENCY models featuring the ECO start/stop function (optional). This newly developed function automatically switches the engine off when the driver shifts to neutral at low speed whilst depressing the brake pedal. If the criteria for stopping the engine are fulfilled, a special display appears in the instrument cluster to inform the driver.

The moment the clutch is pressed or the brake pedal released, the engine springs back to life almost noiselessly and in a fraction of a second. This ability to restart the engine swiftly yet smoothly gives the ECO start/stop function a key edge over other systems of this type. To achieve this, Mercedes-Benz fits a starter-generator which is connected to the crankshaft via the belt drive. This allows the engine to start much faster and far more quietly than with the conventional starter.
During the journey, the starter-generator feeds the electrical system on board the B-Class with energy.

In practical operation, substantial fuel savings of up to nine percent can be achieved with the ECO start/stop function, particularly when driving in city traffic with frequent stops at traffic lights or in tailbacks.

Natural-gas drive: a clean and economical alternative

A further new addition to the B-Class range bears the initials "NGT" on the right-hand side of its tailgate. They stand for "Natural Gas Technology" and identify a model variant which is as economical as it is environmentally compatible, courtesy of its bi-fuel drive: the B 170 NGT BlueEFFICIENCY is able to run on both natural gas and premium grade petrol while delivering an identical maximum output of 85 kW/116 hp.

In addition to the petrol tank, there are five natural gas reservoirs whose total capacity of 16 kilograms equates to a range of over 300 kilometres. With overall NEDC consumption figures of 7.3 litres of premium petrol and 4.9 kilograms of natural gas per 100 kilometres, the new B 170 NGT BlueEFFICIENCY is therefore able to attain a total range in excess of 1000 kilometres. The driver determines which power source the engine is run on at the touch of a button using the multifunction steering wheel; an electronic control unit carries out the switch instantaneously without any jolts – even while on the move.

The four-cylinder engine has been modified by Mercedes-Benz to include additional gas injectors on the underside of the intake manifold. A close-coupled pressure governor with electromagnetic shut-off valve regulates the supply of natural gas and keeps the pressure within the system constant.

The installation of the gas reservoirs, which are located in the rear and underneath the front passenger footwell, reduces the boot capacity of the B‑Class by 128 to 422 litres (as per the VDA measurement method), but there is still sufficient space for carrying a family’s luggage.

The lower carbon dioxide emissions and cheaper fuel costs make natural gas an attractive alternative to petrol and diesel, both ecologically and economically speaking. On the NEDC cycle, the CO2 emissions are 17 percent lower than in the petrol-powered B 170 at 135 grams per kilometre. If the 4.9 kilograms (7.5 m³) of natural gas consumed per 100 kilometres by the new B 170 NGT BlueEFFICIENCY is converted into the equivalent quantity of petrol energy, the fuel cost per kilometre is around 50 percent less than when running on petrol.

Environmental Certificate: first ever lifecycle assessment for NGT drive too

Mercedes engineers have, for the first time, compiled an eco balance sheet for the natural-gas drive. It forms one element of the Environmental Certificate awarded to the B-Class by Germany’s TÜV Technical Inspection Authority. Mercedes-Benz is the only automotive brand in the world to have been granted this certificate, which is based on the stringent international standard ISO 14062 "Design For Environment". It is a confirmation of the Stuttgart-based brand’s total commitment to all aspects of environmental protection. In contrast to just the standardised measurement of exhaust emissions and fuel consumption on the roller dynamometer, Mercedes engineers analyse the environmental compatibility of vehicles over their entire lifecycle – starting with their manufacture, continuing with their many years of use and finishing with their end-of-life disposal.

In all, over 40,000 individual processes come under scrutiny, whose analysis, computation and evaluation ultimately produce a comprehensive eco profile.

This in turn forms the basis for the environmental certificate of the B-Class.

The results of this integrated analysis over a total distance travelled of 150,000 kilometres highlight, for example, a number of clear advantages for the natural-gas drive. The overall CO2 emissions are some 20 percent below the figure for the comparable petrol-engined model. Nitrogen oxide emissions are eleven percent lower, while the experts have calculated a 54 percent difference in carbon monoxide emissions over the entire lifecycle in favour of the natural-gas drive. The greater ecological cost of the manufacturing process for the new B 170 NGT is therefore balanced out after a distance of 17,300 kilometres.

The environmentally driven concept of the B-Class is clearly evident from its use of high-quality recycled plastics, for instance, or its components made from natural materials, including flax, cotton, coconut fibre, wood veneer and fibres from the abaca banana.

Occupant protection: extensive safety features enhanced yet further

When it comes to safety, the B-Class sets an example for all other models of these dimensions to follow: in the European NCAP test programme, the Sports Tourer was awarded the highest rating of five stars.

The comprehensive safety specification, comprising two-stage front airbags, belt tensioners for the front and outer rear seats, belt force limiters plus active head restraints in the front, ISOFIX child seat attachment points and head/thorax sidebags, has now been complemented by the addition of crash-responsive emergency lighting in the passenger compartment.
Following an accident

of a predetermined severity, the lighting comes on automatically to allow the occupants to get their bearings more easily in the dark and expedite the work of the rescue services.

Active safety: flashing brake lights as warning to other motorists

Accident prevention is the overriding priority of the Mercedes safety concept – a concept that is geared towards motoring reality. To help them bring critical situations under control safely and with ease, drivers of the B-Class can count on highly effective, standard-fit technology in the form of systems such as ABS, Brake Assist and ESP®. The Mercedes engineers have gone that little bit further though by seeking to devise a way of offering other motorists added safety too. The result is a simple but highly effective method of avoiding rear-end collisions: flashing brake lights. This safety technology is included as standard on the 2008 model year B-Class.

During testing, Mercedes engineers were able to ascertain that the braking reaction time of motorists is quickened by an average of 0.2 seconds if they see a flashing red warning signal instead of conventional brake lights in an emergency braking situation. This shortens the stopping distance by around 4.40 metres if they are travelling at a speed of 80 km/h, and by a whole 5.50 metres or so when braking from 100 km/h. Brake lights flashing at a high frequency therefore prove to be an effective means of alerting drivers behind to the risk of a rear-end collision.

The flashing brake lights are triggered automatically if the driver initiates emergency braking when travelling at a speed of 50 km/h or more. And if the B‑Class is braked to a stop from a speed of over 70 km/h, the hazard warning lights will come on too.

Assistance systems: automatic parking with ultrasound and electric steering

The Electronic Stability Program has been expanded to include a new, standard function: the automatic hill-start assist. This prevents the B-Class from rolling backwards as the driver switches from the brake to the accelerator pedal when starting off uphill. In such situations, the ESP® briefly maintains the brake pressure to make pulling away easy.

Reverse parking will also pose less of a challenge for motorists in future. The new active parking assist (optional) searches for an appropriate spot at the side of the road as the B-Class drives by, than takes care of all the steering manoeuvres as the driver reverses into it. How it works: at speeds below 35 km/h, ultrasonic sensors at the sides of the car scan the zones to the immediate left and right of the B-Class, and measure the length and depth of any potential parking spaces. Once a suitable spot has been found, the system flashes up a message in the display to inform the driver. When the driver engages reverse, confirms the display and presses the accelerator, the active parking assist takes over the steering and automatically manoeuvres the B‑Class into the space. All the driver has to do is operate the accelerator and brake; the PARKTRONIC system’s ultrasonic sensors provide further assistance by indicating how much room there is in front of and behind the B-Class.

To be able to use the automatic parking feature, the parking spot only has to be 1.30 metres longer than the B-Class – an indication of the technology’s tremendous precision.

The newly developed assistance system comprises a total of ten ultrasonic sensors in the front and rear bumper, as well as an electronic control unit that processes the sensor signals and calculates the best path to take into the parking space. This information is supplied to the electromechanical power steering in the B‑Class, enabling its electric motor to perform the necessary steering movements.

Infotainment: new systems for digital listening pleasure and Europe-wide navigation

It is not just the spacious interior, the high-grade materials and the standard automatic climate control that make the B-Class such a pleasure to travel in: the new generation of infotainment systems has an important role to play too. There are four different options to choose from: Audio 5, Audio 20, Audio 50 APS and the COMAND APS. All units from the Audio 20 upwards incorporate a radio with dual tuner, colour display, Bluetooth interface for mobile phones, CD player, automatic volume adjustment, plus a connection for external audio devices in the glove compartment.

The Audio 50 APS additionally features a Europe-wide DVD-based navigation system and DVD player, while the top-of-the-range COMAND APS offers even more functions, including the even faster HDD navigation system, the Music Register, a slot for SD memory cards as well as voice control.

To cater for motorists who have their personal music compilations stored on an MP3 player, a USB stick or any other external audio device, Mercedes-Benz has developed an interactive media interface. It can be specified as an option and allows iPod & Co. to be linked up to the Sports Tourer’s infotainment system. This has the advantage of allowing the external audio devices to be operated by simply using the buttons on the multifunction steering wheel, while the track titles are shown in both the instrument cluster and the centre console’s colour display.

The sophisticated infotainment systems may be optionally combined with the "Logic 7" surround sound system , which transforms the passenger compartment of the B-Class into a concert hall on wheels

Unrivalled safety features as standard

The Mercedes-Benz M-Class has always set the benchmark in terms of safety in the SUV segment. In future it will also come as standard with the anticipatory occupant protection system PRE-SAFE® and NECK-PRO head restraints.
Fuel consumption reduced by up to 0.4 litres per 100 kilometres

The M-Class is powered by powerful yet economical V6 and V8 petrol or diesel engines, which are now even more fuel-efficient. The 4MATIC permanent all-wheel drive delivers outstanding performance both on and off-road. And the standard-fit 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission with optimised shift characteristics translates the power from the engines into refined dynamism.
Five units are available in the new-generation M-Class ranging from 140 to 285 kW (190 to 388 hp). The engineers’ meticulous attention to detail has reduced fuel consumption by up to 0.4 litres per 100 kilometres compared with the outgoing models. Moreover, the most powerful engine developing 375 kW/510 hp is available in the guise of the ML 63 AMG 4MATIC.
ML 63 AMG with even more attractive looks

The Mercedes-Benz ML 63 AMG now demonstrates even more emphatically its exceptional status as the performance SUV with the largest displacement and highest output. The new AMG front apron is an eye-catching feature with its high-gloss, chromed underguard. The lower cooling air inlet appears even larger thanks to the central black grille. New-look headlamps flank the equally new AMG-specific radiator grille: painted in high-gloss black, its three radiator louvres feature chrome highlights. Round fog lamps set well to the outside with chrome surrounds and the flared wheel arches in the body colour make the flagship M‑Class appear even wider and more muscular.

Even more unmistakable, even more powerful: this philosophy is also continued at the rear. The high-gloss, chromed underguard is the undoubted highlight on the equally new AMG rear apron with integrated reflectors. Further visual highlights include the two chromed twin tailpipes on the AMG sports exhaust system. The dark-tinted tail lights are replaced with LED tail lights with their clear-glass look if the optional bi-xenon headlamps are specified. New-look exterior mirrors as well as the standard-fit aluminium-look roof rails add the finishing touches to the styling modifications.

Viewed from the side, the new 20-inch 5-spoke AMG light-alloy wheels make a bold statement. Painted titanium grey with a high-sheen finish, the 10-inch tyres are shod with 295/40 R 20 tyres front and rear. An even more impressive wheel/tyre combination is available as an option: titanium-grey-painted, high-sheen 21-inch AMG light-alloy wheels with the new twin-spoke styling are shod with 295/35 R 21 tyres.

The new AMG ergonomic steering wheel stands out in the practical, high-quality interior of ML 63 AMG: perforated leather adorns the specially shaped grip area, while the bottom two spokes are finished with a silver-coloured insert. New AMG aluminium shift paddles allow the driver to shift gear manually. A nappa leather-trimmed dashboard is also available as an option.

The new telematics generation also features in the M-Class. The Audio 20 fitted as standard in the ML 63 AMG combines ease of use and logical menu structure with consummate entertainment. A hands-free system with Bluetooth technology comes as standard and a new Media Interface in the glove compartment is available as an option, which enables mobile audio devices such as the iPod to be fully integrated and then controlled via the audio system’s user interface. Mercedes-Benz also offers the optional enhanced LINGUATRONIC voice-operated control system with its hallmark outstanding functionality in conjunction with the new telematics generation.
AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine and permanent, asymmetrical all-wheel drive

With a maximum output of 375 kW/510 hp at 6800 rpm the ML 63 AMG remains the most powerful off-roader on the market two-and-a-half years after its launch. The AMG 6.3-litre V8 engine develops maximum torque of 630 Nm at 5200 rpm from a displacement of 6208 cc. In essence, this superior engine delivers top-notch performance. The ML 63 AMG accelerates from 0-100 km/h in 5.0 seconds, top speed is 250 km/h (electronically limited). Power transfer is via the AMG SPEEDSHIFT 7G-TRONIC automatic transmission with three drive modes.

The permanent all-wheel drive is decidedly sporty: the power is split asymmetrically 40:60 between the front and rear wheels to provide optimum agility. The AMG sports suspension based on AIRMATIC guarantees dynamic performance combined with the hallmark Mercedes long-distance comfort. The air suspension features AMG-specific damper struts and the specially configured adaptive damping system ADS including automatic level control all-round. Both the dampers and springs instantly respond as the current driving situation changes, but their settings may also be adjusted manually in three stages at the touch of a button. The generously dimensioned AMG high-performance braking system, which features internally ventilated and perforated brake discs all-round, guarantees the shortest possible braking distances and optimum resistance to fading.
AMG sports seats with nappa leather upholstery and Alcantara inserts

The standard specification of the ML 63 AMG includes electrically adjustable AMG sports seats with nappa leather upholstery, Alcantara inserts in the shoulder areas, multicontour function and heating. The AMG instrument cluster comes with a specially designed AMG main menu with gear indicator, recommended upshifts, as well as engine oil temperature and battery voltage display. The integrated RACETIMER enables the driver to record lap times on a racing circuit.

2008 Porsche Boxster RS 60 Spyder

RS 60 Spyder

Porsche will present on April 4th at the 18th Auto Mobil International (AMI) in Leipzig the new Boxster RS 60 Spyder. The RS 60 Spyder is a vivid reminder of the Porsche racing era of the ’sixties in color, shape, fittings and philosophy.

The Boxster RS 60 Spyder has a maximum power of 299 HP and features sporting exhaust system, sporty driving dynamics combined with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) as standard equipment, and 19-inch wheels.

At the motor show there are other highlights to be appreciated, too: the innovative power train of the future Cayenne, with its Full Parallel Hybrid drive giving particularly low fuel consumption, and the Porsche RS Spyder racing car.

Press release

Dr. Ing. h.c. F. Porsche AG, Stuttgart, is presenting the new Boxster RS 60 Spyder in Germany. From April 4, the most recent model in the successful Boxster series will be celebrating its first home appearance at the 18th Auto Mobil International (AMI) in Leipzig. The city is home to Porsche’s second production location, complementing the main factory in Stuttgart-Zuffenhausen. At the motor show there are other highlights to be appreciated, too: the innovative power train of the future Cayenne, with its Full Parallel Hybrid drive giving particularly low fuel consumption, and the Porsche RS Spyder racing car.

With eight overall wins in the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) in 2007, the RS Spyder has proved itself as the racing car with the most international overall victories to have been designed and built in Germany. Moreover, in its triumphal progress through the USA, the RS Spyder was using the especially environmentally friendly E10-fuel which contains ten percent bioethanol by volume.

By contrast, the newest version of the mid-engine two-seater Porsche Boxster is reminiscent of the great racing triumphs of the 1960s. The RS 60 Spyder is a vivid reminder of the Porsche racing era of the ’sixties in color, shape, fittings and philosophy. The Boxster, which enjoys the full power of 303 PS (223 kW), thanks to its sporting exhaust system, holds the promise of correspondingly sporty driving dynamics combined with Porsche Active Suspension Management (PASM) as standard equipment, and 19-inch wheels. The modern Roadster in ’sixties style comes luxuriously equipped, and – in commemoration of the year 1960 when its ‘role model’ and predecessor, the Porsche 718 RS 60 Spyder, first made its appearance – production is limited to a series of 1,960 vehicles.

Porsche will be giving a privileged insight into its development activities with the Cayenne Hybrid, whose innovative drive train can be seen in Leipzig at the AMI. The emphatically sporting all-terrain vehicle will be available within the present decade as a “Full Parallel Hybrid”. This particularly efficient Hybrid system has an electric motor placed between the internal combustion engine and the transmission. The Hybrid drive offers not only maximized fuel economy, but also the additional possibility of driving in a completely emission-free, electrically-powered mode.

Once again, the Porsche factory in Leipzig has its own information counter at the exhibition stand. There, visitors can book factory tours, reserve self-drive or accompanied drives in a Porsche on the works’ own running-in and test track, or can glean general information on Porsche’s activities in Leipzig. From 2009, a second Porsche model will be taking shape at the Leipzig works alongside the Cayenne. The new four-door Gran Turismo Panamera will then be manufactured at the Porsche factory, which meanwhile will have been extended and oriented towards the newest production methods.

Horrific accident on Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway near Ghantoot

Dubai Accident

Abu Dhabi: At least three people were killed and nearly 350 injured in a horrific 60 vehicle pile-up on the Abu Dhabi-Dubai highway near Ghantoot on Tuesday.

However, Gulf News has learnt that the death toll could be five. The 25km stretch of the UAE's busiest highway from Abu Dhabi to Dubai was closed for more than five hours, resulting in huge tailbacks during rush hours.

Police said among the 347 injured, six people were critical, while 39 suffered medium injuries. The remaining suffered minor injuries. Police said 25 vehicles caught fire following the accidents caused by poor visibility due to the thick fog and lack of attention by motorists.

Lieutenant General Saif Bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Minister of Interior, said coordination by officials contributed to limiting the fatalities. Quick response by the rescue and ambulance department officials helped save lives and in reopening the road to traffic at the earliest. He called on all road users to exercise caution, especially during early morning when visibility is low.

Colonel Osman Al Tamimi, Director of the Emergency and Safety Management section of Abu Dhabi Police said the central operations room received a call at 6.39am informing about a series of pile ups between Bahia bridge and Ghantoot bridge in the direction towards Dubai. Ambulances, fire engines and helicopters of the Air Wing were despatched immediately.

Dubai police and support teams from Armed Forces as well as a number of traffic patrols joined the rescue operations.

"The officials worked towards moving the injured to the nearest hospitals and extinguishing the fire," he said, adding that the roads were reopened for traffic in record time.

An Abu Dhabi traffic police officer at the crash site said: "The crash happened because everyone was speeding despite the severe weather conditions. Drivers weren't leaving a safe distance between cars and this resulted in everyone hitting each other after the first crash."

Lumma Design CLR X530

CLR X530

After recently unleashed the X5 as the X530 with brute-force 530 bhp, Lumma Design released the CLR X530 tuning kit for the diesel versions of the BMW X5.

Lumma has implemented the diesel motor tuning with its D-Power-Box. This additional electronic circuit now coaxes a generous 275 bhp out of the 3.0d, instead of the standard 235. The torque increases from 520 to a convincing 600 Nm. The 3.0sd attains performance data that makes some sports cars turn pale in comparison. This is because, a phenomenal 330 bhp, instead of 286, has been fitted and instead of 580, there are 660 Nm on the power train.

An even sportier rear appearance for the 3.0d and 3.0sd is guaranteed by LUMMA’s exhaust pipe covers, two on each side (120x95 mm). LUMMA continues to furnish the petrol versions with the complete sport exhaust system of stainless steel.

Press release

After LUMMA DESIGN recently unleashed the X5 as the X530 with brute-force 530 bhp, the German tuner has now also turned its attention to the diesel versions. They have also been treated to the broader X530 aerodynamic kit in addition to a substantial increase in power delivery and torque. This also cuts a good figure in white, which is complemented by white wheels (see photographic material). In addition, LUMMA has made changes to the chassis, sound and interior.

Performance enhancement for 3.0d and 3.0sd
LUMMA has implemented the diesel motor tuning with its D-Power-Box. This additional electronic circuit now coaxes a generous 275 bhp out of the 3.0d, instead of the standard 235. The torque increases from 520 to a convincing 600 Nm. The 3.0sd attains performance data that makes some sports cars turn pale in comparison. This is because, a phenomenal 330 bhp, instead of 286, has been fitted and instead of 580, there are 660 Nm on the power train.

Of course, LUMMA also continues to offer a performance enhancement for the 4.8 litre pertrol-V8 by a moderate 28 bhp or by considerably more horsepower to 530 bhp, in this case with compressor.

An even sportier rear appearance for the 3.0d and 3.0sd is guaranteed by LUMMA’s exhaust pipe covers, two on each side (120x95 mm). LUMMA continues to furnish the petrol versions with the complete sport exhaust system of stainless steel.

CLR X530 look for the diesel models
What already looked good on the 4.8i is naturally just as perfect on the diesel X5. The LUMMA body kit CLR X530 is composed of a front spoiler with fog lamps in extravagantly-formed air inlets plus racing grid, a rear apron with a diffuser look, broader wings at the front and back that radiate power, new side sill mouldings as well as the lettering “CLR X 530“. All components are largely made of PUR-RIM in original equipment manufacturer quality.

The body kit can be expanded by further components. LUMMA offers a roof spoiler extension which can simply be affixed to the upper rim of the boot lid. A very special eye-catcher is the high-quality, handmade LUMMA sport-look light-weight hood (10.5 kg) made of carbon/Kevlar composite material, with its characteristic opening for discharging warm air from the engine bay. A set of LUMMA sport design exterior mirror caps, which have replaced the original parts, complement the LUMMA body kit perfectly through their aerodynamically-optimised design. The mirror caps are also available in the motor sport material par excellence, carbon. LUMMA restores a more “serious” look to the headlights of the CLR X530 with the help of a set of covers. Similarly, LUMMA also equips the taillights with a set of covers (4-part and likewise adhesive). The dark-tinted LUMMA taillights form a welcome contrast to a bright (or white, see image material) paint finish (export only!).

A good idea, which makes sense in multi-storey car parks or other places that are badly-lit or not lit at all, is the LUMMA entry illumination. On each side of the car floor, five LEDs go on when the doors are opened or unlocked and light the way for the passengers getting into the car.

Wheels in 22 inch and lower suspension setting
With its complete wheel sets, LUMMA lets its customers choose from three 22-inch possibilities. For one, there’s the wheel set with the new 10x22 inch sports rim LUMMA “Racing 1” in multi-part look with silver or matt black wheel spider and polished stainless steel rim flange, as well as the lettering “LUMMA Racing” on the centre cap. The second possibility is the wheel set “Racing 3” with a one-piece rim in multi-part look and polished rim flange.

The wheel set “Racing 2” can be especially recommended for white vehicles with its one-piece sports rim in the ice crystal-like Y-Design “LUMMA Edition”, which is also available in white to match the vehicle, or, at an extra charge, in any other desired colour.

LUMMA fits all three versions with high performance tyres of the dimension 295/30-22. For example, with the PROXES S/T (300 km/h approval!) of its technology partner Toyo. LUMMA also supplies the wheels with rims in 9.5x20? and a tyre dimension of 275/40-20.

LUMMA achieves a somewhat lower centre of gravity and more agile handling by mounting LUMMA/H&R lowering springs. A good compromise between comfort and maintaining vehicle height, which still suffices for uneven terrain.

Sporty elegant ambience in the interior through wood, carbon or piano varnish
The LUMMA program offers a very large range of additional accessories for the CLR X530 interior. Ergonomically formed and with a root wood or leather trim – the LUMMA sports steering wheel communicates a stronger bond with the vehicle. The LUMMA gear stick head is likewise a feast for the eyes in a root-wood version. The elegant cockpit is also equipped with coloured instrument faces (see photographic material: matching the vehicle colour white; speedometer up to 330 km/h) as well as aluminium door sills. Racing car atmosphere is transmitted by LUMMA aluminium pedals and an aluminium foot rest. A foot mat in high quality velour with an embroidered emblem and real leather edging (colour as desired) makes the cabin homier. LUMMA also offers a matching boot mat of the same material.

Bugatti Type 12-2 Streamliner

 Bugatti Type 12-2 Streamliner
About a future 2+2 model from Bugatti there are already lots of rumors. And with all those rumors around it was normal for designers to gave their own point of view of how the car might look like. Today’s preview comes from 31-year-old freelance designer Reuben Zammit from Malta.

The 2+2 seater will be a strong competitor for model like Ferrari 612 Scaglietti.

 Bugatti Type 12-2The aim was to get the type 12-2 immediately recognizable, yet make a signature of it’s own for a specific marquee. A classic front engine rear wheel drive layout. The shape allows for a boot bigger than its rivals, yet keeping the lines flowing. The doors take a large part of the side and the roof for easier access.

The idea is to use a VW derived W12 engine with a twin turbo layout hence the name 12-2. Although not as extravagant as the W16 used in the Veyron, there would be enough power to propel the Type 12-2 to over 200 mph

Audi launches "Iron Man" micro-site

Iron Man Car

udi announced today the launch of the Iron Man microsite. You will be able to immerse yourself in the world of Iron Man that will be launched in early May 2008.

On its complex home page the user can pay a virtual visit to Tony Stark’s top-secret New York workshop. Two perspectives are available: Through the eyes of Tony Stark, trailers and background information on the movie can be called up and viewed. Alternatively the special “Iron Man Vision” infrared viewer can be used, for instance to explore the design details of the Audi R8 and A5. The micro-site also contains historical facts about Audi and the ‘Iron Man’ comic strip, which can be found in a virtual Audi R10 TDI racecar.

To find out more about it, visit the Iron Man microsite.

audi r8 iron man

Press release

Robert Downey Jr. plays Tony Stark, the leading man in the Paramount and Marvel Studios movie version of “Iron Man”. Head of a big industrial complex, he owes his super-powers to an indestructible, hi-tech suit of armor of his own design that has a variety of uses and earns him the title “Iron Man.” When he’s not wearing it, this billionaire technophile relies on his Audi R8. It matches Stark’s super hero guise very well: The slits through which Iron Man views the world resemble the all-LED headlamps on the R8, Stark’s artificial heart with its ring of lights recalls the sports car’s exposed mid-engine and his immensely tough armor is matched by the Audi Space Frame, the high-strength aluminum structure on which this hi-tech automobile is built. The film’s hero and his favored mode of transport both symbolize Audi’s famous technical leadership claim: “Vorsprung durch Technik.”

“The Audi R8 is the perfect car for Tony Stark,” says Iron Man’s director Jon Favreau. “It’s a technical masterpiece, it’s fast and safe – and it’s the ultimate eye-catcher.” Tony Stark delights in luxury; he’s intelligent, demanding and a lover of life to the full. Naturally he utilizes his exceptional abilities for the good of mankind – when he takes on the personality of Iron Man, his super-hero alter ego. There has never been a comic-strip hero with such a deep-seated understanding of technology and the opportunities opened up by innovation and progressive ideas.

The attitudes that the leading character represents were one of the main reasons why Audi became involved in this production: interaction between the role, the movie as a whole and the product is the decisive factor in successful product placement. Michael Renz, Head of Central Marketing at Audi, says: “The character and lifestyle of Tony Stark tie in very well with the attributes of the Audi R8. And in any case, “Iron Man” is one of the world’s best-known, never-aging super-heroes – an opportunity we were determined not to miss!”

But in reality the combination of automobile and screen hero has to be credible – actor Robert Downey Jr. sees it this way too. “I grew up with the Audi mystique. This carmaker has always been right in the forefront when it comes to technology, performance, innovation and safety. I see Tony and myself as worthy ambassadors for Audi – we’re genuine fans of the make.” Renz too regards this as an important precondition: “Unless the star of a production identifies with the brand, and the image of the leading role matches what Audi stands for, the connection is simply not credible enough. We’re fortunate in this respect: Many Hollywood stars value Audi very highly, and are driving our cars in their private lives anyway.”

Audi has another worthy ambassador on the cast list too: Tony Stark’s assistant Virginia “Pepper” Potts, played by Gwyneth Paltrow, drives an Audi S5 in the movie. She is an intelligent, ambitious woman who knows exactly what she wants. The sporty dynamics and elegant finesse of the Audi S5 suit her character well. Her honest approach is evident as the plot progresses: She supports Tony Stark unhesitatingly even before he plunges into his fight against the evil forces of this world. As the chief executive of Stark Industries, a gigantic multinational armaments group, the billionaire demonstrates his ability as a business policymaker. His life changes abruptly, however, when he is kidnapped while launching one of his latest inventions in Afghanistan. The criminals intend to force him to build a weapon of immense destructive force.

Instead of this, Stark develops and builds a revolutionary metal suit of armor while in the kidnappers’ clutches. With its aid he is able to escape and reach home again. His next move is to perfect his suit and start to combat what proves to be a conspiracy of global dimensions. Another loyal colleague in addition to Virginia “Pepper” Potts is Lieutenant Colonel James Rhodes (“Rhodey”), played by Terrence Howard.

This comedy drama, which is full of action and special effects, opens in theaters around the world in early May 2008, but fans and other interested people all over the world don’t need to wait for the movie to reach their local theaters before immersing themselves in the world of “Iron Man.” An Audi micro-site has been produced especially for this movie.

The micro-site goes online at www.audi.com/ironman on March 10, 2008.

“One Man. One Machine. One Mission.” The online campaign starts with this motto alongside the micro-site. The key visual shows Iron Man with the Audi R8. This action-packed motif recalls a movie theater poster and is intended to draw Internet users’ attention to the web site. The decision in favor of this theater-style campaign was a deliberate one, with the aim of strengthening the link between the Audi R8 and Tony Stark, alias Iron Man. In communication terms it is very different from regular Audi advertising. “We want to address a young movie-going public directly,” says Michael Renz. Advertising measures are also being put into effect at Audi dealers, starting in March.

Early in April, communication measures in Germany will be stepped up, with outdoor advertising and movie theater trailers. A notable feature of the trailers is that they were produced especially for Audi and are made up of exclusive scenes from the movie and Audi road shots. All eleven trailers will be placed on the micro-site in succession by the time the movie reaches theaters in early May 2008.

Although the Audi R8 impressed the cast and the production team so much while the movie was being shot, director Jon Favreau found himself facing a slight problem as the story reached its climax. He had planned for the car to be used in a final scene by being involved in a dramatic collision with Iron Man’s wicked adversary. This had to be omitted from the final cut, Favreau explains: “The crash just wasn’t spectacular enough! Our stunt specialists did their best to turn the R8 over onto its roof, which would have given us a dramatic final scene, but they failed – the car clung to the road too well!”

It looks as if the Audi R8 had better stick to what it does best, even after a promising start to its acting career. One of the great Hollywood stars of the past could maybe have hammed this scene with the director’s help, but not a car designed and hand-built according to Audi’s famous “Vorsprung durch Technik” slogan. A car such as this guarantees top dynamic performance, technological leadership and, thanks to its quattro permanent all-wheel drive, clings firmly to the road. Never mind if a spectacular crash could save the world – it’s simply too much to expect of an Audi R8 that’s built to perform its task perfectly in every other way.

Another important role in “Iron Man” – apart from Robert Downey Jr., Gwyneth Paltrow, Terrence Howard and of course the Audi R8 – is played by Jeff Bridges. Jon Favreau is the director and the screenplay was written by Mark Fergus, Hawk Ostby, Art Marcum and Matt Holloway. The producers of “Iron Man” are Avi Arad and Kevin Feige, the executive producers Louis D’Esposito, Peter Billingsley, Jon Favreau, Stan Lee and David Maisel.

Audi has a long product placement tradition. Systematic placement of automobiles in movies is an important element in its communication strategy. Of course, all activity of this kind has to be in conformity with Audi’s general brand strategy. This is why Audi chooses the projects carefully. Its contribution to the movie ‘I, Robot’ (2004) was spectacular: Will Smith drove the RSQ, which was especially designed for ‘I, Robot’ and in fact a futuristic design study for the Audi R8 now seen in ‘Iron Man’. Cars from the brand with the four-ring emblem were also to be seen as “leading automobile actors” in John Frankenheimer’s classic action movie ‘Ronin’ (with Jean Reno und Robert De Niro, 1998), and in ‘The Insider’ (with Russell Crowe, 1999), ‘Mission Impossible II’ (with Tom Cruise, 2000), ‘The Mothman Prophecies’ (with Richard Gere, 2002), ‘About a Boy’ (with Hugh Grant, 2002), Reese Witherspoon’s ‘Natural Blonde 2’ (2003), ‘Transporter 2’ (Jason Statham, 2005) or ‘The Bourne Ultimatum’ (Matt Damon, 2007).

Phantom Coupe sold out already

Phantom Coupe

olls Royce has been on a roll of late, with a 25-percent increase in global production in 2007, and the gorgeous new Phantom Coupe ready to add to last year's record totals. Since the official announcement of the ultra-luxury two-door, 200 orders have already been taken, which represents all production for 2008. Even more impressive is the fact that two-thirds of the orders come from customers who have never before owned a Rolls. It doesn't hurt that the Phantom Coupe's Drophead sibling is sold out through summer 2009, which means the fixed-top Phantom has little short-term competition on the show floor.

Ferrari One-to-One personalization program

Ferrari at Geneva 2008

Show-stopping new production cars and concepts were not lacking in Geneva this year. There were so many, in fact, that we struggled to take it all in. Yet while Ferrari didn't have any new models to show us, somehow we couldn't help but slow down in front of its booth as we rushed from press conference to press conference. Maybe it was the classic Daytona sitting next to the 612 Scaglietti bathed in soft light, or maybe the pair of lookers standing next to them. Guess we'll never know, but you can feast your eyes on all the sexy models in the gallery below.

What Ferrari did unveil at the Swiss show, however, was a new customization program. Called One-to-One, the program takes the catalog of options under the existing Carrozzeria Scaglietti Programme a step further. A customization studio is being built at the factory in Maranello where clients can hand-pick a wide variety of options from leather swatches to brake calipers and everything in between. The program is being launched on the 612 Scaglietti, but will assuredly be broadened to the entire range in due course. For the 612, Ferrari also announced the availability of the SuperFast robotic gearbox and a new electrochromatic glass roof that can tint and lighten at the push of a button like the folding hardtop on the limited edition Superamerica. More on the latest from Maranello is available in the press release after the jump.

PRESS RELEASE

Geneva, March 4th 2008 - Ferrari is present at the 78th International Geneva Motor Show with its entire GT range, the F2007 single-seater that won last year's Formula 1 Drivers' and Constructors' World Championships, the legendary 365 GTB4 "Daytona" which celebrates its 40th anniversary this year, and a special area dedicated to the One-to-One Programme.

Taking pride of place at the Ferrari stand, however, is the 612 Scaglietti, the model being used to inaugurate the new One-to-One Personalisation Programme. Ferrari intends to allow every client to fully personalise this flagship model, courtesy of a wide array of new content as well as the options available through the Carrozzeria Scaglietti Programme. In fact, a special dedicated "atelier" area has been set up at the factory in which clients can put together their own bespoke 612 Scaglietti accessory by accessory, detail by detail. In exactly the same way as they would at an haute couture fashion house, owners can choose details and materials they want for their car in consultation with the Ferrari experts who will actually build it to their exact specifications and tastes.

We have recreated a compact version of the real telier (due to be officially opened in Maranello in the near future) on the stand. Further such ateliers will then be opened over the next few months in other parts of the world.
Clients will be assisted in making their selections by dedicated Programme consultants who can help them at every stage of defining their car's specification. Naturally, despite the many variations on offer, the Ferrari flagship's benchmark quality and styling characteristics will remain unchanged and no modifications will be permitted that would impinge on the signature Prancing Horse safety and reliability.

All of these unique new 612 Scagliettis will be built in a dedicated assembly area at the Maranello factory.

To underscore the sheer depth and flexibility of the personalisation options available for the 612 Scaglietti, we are exhibiting at Geneva a version which has been inspired, right down to its perforated leather Daytona seats, by the classic 365 GTB4 which will stand alongside it. The famous 365 GTB4 was, of course, affectionately dubbed the Daytona in honour of the historic one-two-three finish delivered by the Scuderia Ferrari in the eponymous 24 Hour Race in 1967. The arrival of the 365 GTB4 was a significant moment in the company's history and Ferrari will be celebrating this car's 40th anniversary in 2008 with a series of events across the globe.

The 612 Scagliettis being used to launch the One-to-One Programme incorporate a series of technical evolutions that reflect the Ferrari philosophy of constantly introducing innovations in each model. Most notably, the V12 flagship now boasts an electrochromic panoramic roof which covers the entire top of the cabin. This has the dual advantage of giving occupants the feeling of driving along in a drop-top whilst enjoying the comfort and safety of a coupé. However, this is no ordinary panoramic roof. It is made from electrochromic glass which can be changed at the touch of a button to adjust the levels of sunlight allowed into the cabin. The electrochromic glass solution was developed in close collaboration with Saint Gobain, a partner with whom Ferrari has most recently developed a similar highly innovative solution for the Superamerica.

In addition to its electrochromic roof, the 612 Scaglietti also sports the aptly named SuperFast gearbox which delivers an exceptional gear-shifting time of 100 milliseconds and a reduced inertia clutch to enhance the engine's responsiveness still further. The iconic Ferrari manettino, now featured on the entire range, has also been added to the steering wheel.

Another model being showcased at Geneva is the F430 Spider, a rear-engined 8-cylinder that combines blistering performance with open-top driving pleasure. The version on the stand is displayed in a historic colour Grigio Ferro, with a sophisticated Cioccolato interiors. The F430 Spider has proved an enormous success since its launch and in 2007 won prestige awards from international publications, such as Quattroruote, Autozeitung, Auto Illustrierte and Auto Motor und Sport.

The Company's sporting history is also represented on the stand by the 599 GTB Fiorano, the highest performance production model ever built at Maranello and seen here in a classic Rosso Corsa livery, and the 430 Scuderia, an extreme model voted "Dream Car of the Year" by the authoritative British car magazine Top Gear.

The more track-oriented side of Ferrari's dual soul is represented most ably on the stand by the F2007, the single-seater that won the World Championship last year, bringing to 15 the overall number of Formula 1 Drivers' and Constructors' titles won by Maranello so far.

612 SCAGLIETTI

The 612 Scaglietti is the result of an avant-garde design that continues the great Ferrari 2+2 tradition in fabulous style. Designed by Pininfarina, the 612 Scaglietti is named in honour of Sergio Scaglietti, the legendary Modenese stylist and coachbuilder responsible for bodying some of the most beautiful Ferraris of the 1950s and 60s. The 612 Scaglietti epitomises Ferrari's talent for innovation and design. This thrillingly nimble, beautifully balanced sporty front-engined rear-wheel drive berlinetta offers a cabin capable of accommodating four occupants in unprecedented onboard comfort, thanks to a host of accessories and a fantastic specification. The 612 Scaglietti is a sumptuous, roomy two-door four-seater that's a pleasure to be aboard regardless of the driving conditions.

The chassis and bodywork. These are made entirely from light, tough aluminium which translates into enhanced performance, braking and road-holding all in one.

Engine The V12 engine has a dry sump lubrication system featuring both delivery and scavenge pumps, twin overhead cams, 48 valves, maximum power of 540 hp at 7250 rpm, maximum torque of 60 kgm at 5250 rpm. The car has a maximum speed of 320 kph, and 0 to 100 kph acceleration of 4.0 secs.

Gearbox, 6-speed, F1-type featuring new SuperFast technology that cuts gear-shifting times to 100 milliseconds. Courtesy of either the steering wheel-mounted manettino and specific button, the gearbox can easily switch from very high performance situations to city or touring driving.

Clutch: Twin-plate to reduce weight and rotating masses as well as thermal and mechanical inertia.

Brakes. Carbon-ceramic material (CCM) Brembo brakes with vented discs that are fade and vibration-resistant even in extreme and intensive situations. The fact that the brakes are so light also reduces the unsprung masses. Large-diameter discs: 380x36mm with 6-pot callipers front and 360x34 and 4-pot callipers rear.

MAGIC INDIA DISCOVERY

The Magic India Discovery Tour started from Mumbai on February 25th and will see two 612 Scagliettis cover a route stretching more than 13,000 kilometres. More than 50 journalists from all over the world will take turns behind the wheels of the cars which return to the Mumbai on May 8th.

The two 612 Scagliettis (one red, the other white, both sporting a specially designed livery) will feature a few absolutely minimal modifications to allow them to negotiate the more difficult sections of the tour. The modifications involve the fitting of an underbody protector made from 4 mm duraluminium rather than plastic and a slightly higher suspension setting to deal with the tougher road surfaces. Otherwise, however, they will be entirely straightforward production cars.

The Magic India Discovery tour is divided into 12 stages and runs over 74 days. The start from Mumbai's Gateway of India was watched by Fiat Group Vice-President John Elkan and Ratan Tata, Chairman of the Tata Group. The two Scagliettis will head south along the coast to the city of Trivandrum near the very southern tip of the Indian peninsula, turning up towards Bangalore and Kolkata (Calcutta). The final part of the voyage takes the cars up along the river Ganges and north to the Pakistani border. It then heads back down towards New Delhi and on through fascinating Rajasthan before returning to Mumbai.

The Magic India Discovery tour will enjoy the invaluable support of the Tata Group, Tata Motors, Tata Consultancy Services, Taj Hotels, Shell, Fiat India Pvt Ltd., Alcoa, Pirelli, Saima Avandero and OMR.

Assistance and spare parts will be provided by eight support vehicles: five Tata cars, two Fiats and one specially fitted-out Iveco truck.

In addition to the journalists driving the two 612 Scagliettis and the photographers, camera operators, the tour will also be accompanied by a technical assistance and logistics team for its entire duration.

The 612 Scaglietti is Ferrari's top of the range model and in line with its elegant, exclusive image, we will also be providing our guests on the tour with sophisticated colonial style clothing. In addition to this, legendary Milanese hatmaker Borsalino has created a contemporary take on the classic colonial Pith helmet as the weather will be particularly hot and sunny.

The www.ferrariworld.com and www.media.ferrari.com websites will feature constantly updated news and high resolution images throughout the tour also.

FERRARI BUSINESS

2007 BALANCE SHEET: A RECORD YEAR

In the year of Ferrari's 60 year anniversary, beautifully topped off by our seventh Constructors' World title in nine years in Formula 1 and our sixth Drivers' title in the last eight years of the World Championship, all of the main economic indicators were up to excellent levels.

Ferrari's revenues (turnover) increased from the 1,447 million euro recorded in 2006 to 1,668 million euro in 2007, a jump of 15.3%.

A total of 6,465 road cars (i.e. track cars excluded) were delivered to end clients, an increase of 14% on 2006. The emerging markets showed the strongest growth. Sales to the Asia-Pacific region rose by 47.2% on last year's figure while the Middle East was up by 32.3%. The trend was positive too, however, in more traditional markets such as the United States (+7.7%), the United Kingdom (+8.2%) and Germany (+5.9%).

Our trading profit of 266 million euro represents a massive 45.4% increase on last year's figure and brings our ROS (Return on Sales) up to 16% compared to 12.6% in 2006.

FERRARI FINANCIAL SERVICES

Founded in late 2006, Ferrari Financial Services is made up of three legal companies. Ferrari Financial Services SpA is the Italian mother company and directly manages the Italian market. It also controls Ferrari Financial Services AG (which operates on the German, French, Austrian, Belgian and Swiss markets) and Ferrari Financial Services Inc. which, through our dealership network, covers the whole of the USA.
In 2007, Ferrari Financial Services achieved 27% market penetration on the seven markets on which it operates. In other words, around one third of the cars manufactured and sold by Maranello were purchased using its financing contracts.
The average length of these finance contracts is 40 months and the amounts involved range from 100,000 euros to up to four million dollars, the price fetched by California Spider sold recently on the American market. The Ferrari Financial Services portfolio also includes two Ferrari Enzos (average value: 700,000 euros) and no less than seven former F1 single-seaters (average value: 1.5 million euro).
FFS offers a choice of four different financial packages to suit the various categories of car covered: GT from current range, competition cars, classic and pre-owned cars, Formula 1 and limited series).

Each package includes a range of options from financing for more traditional services (insurance or scheduled services) to ultra-exclusive driving courses certified by the current Scuderia Ferrari drivers.

FERRARI CLASSICHE

Introduced in July 2006, the Ferrari Classiche division provides restoration and maintenance services, technical assistance and authenticity certificates to classic Ferrari owners. To date, Ferrari Classiche has received over 800 requests for certificates of authenticity and issued over 600. The certification is carried out using the data contained in the Company's technical and historic archive which includes information on all of the GT, competition and sports prototypes cars built at Maranello since the Prancing Horse's foundation.
2008 looks set to be another excellent year for Ferrari collectors too, with a series of special events that includes celebrations for the 40th anniversary of the legendary 365 GTB4 "Daytona" during the Mugello Historic Festival (April 5th and 6th). Then on May 18th, the Fiorano Circuit will host the second edition of the "Leggenda e Passione" auction organised by RM Auctions in collaboration with Sotheby's.

2008 SPORTING ACTIVITIES

2007 saw Ferrari sign a technological collaboration agreement with the A1GP World Cup of Motorsport to supply engines for the series' single-seaters. Ferrari will also act as a consultant on the design of the chassis of the cars competing until 2014. The collaboration begins from the 2008/2009 Championship.

FERRARI CORSE CLIENTI

Client racers have played a major role in Ferrari's sporting activities since the foundation of the Marque. This led to the Ferrari Challenge being set up in 1993 followed in 2001 by a dedicated Corse Clienti division. Corse Clienti currently organises the international Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli and Shell Ferrari Historic Challenge, provides support to Ferrari clients taking part in the GT championships and manages the F1 Clienti department, the exclusive FXX Programme and the Pilota Ferrari driving courses.

PILOTA FERRARI DRIVING COURSES

The Ferrari driving course programme began in 1993 with just one type of course (Basic) but in the years that followed it developed to meet client demand into three levels of increasing complexity: Advanced, Evolution and Challenge.
Between 1993 and the present, in fact, over 4,000 clients from all parts of the globe have attended our courses.
Over 700 individuals signed up for them in 2007 alone, in fact. More than 400 of these attended the courses held at Fiorano: 17% from Italy, 55% from other European markets, 13% from America, and 15% from Australia and Asia.
The Chinese courses attracted over 80 participants to three different circuits in Shanghai, Beijing and Zhuhai.
The Ferrari North America Driving School sessions brought upwards of 200 drivers to the Mont-Tremblant Circuit in Quebec, Canada.
The Pilota Ferrari on Ice course was launched this year also and will help clients hone their skills at controlling their car in adverse conditions.
A special course developed in collaboration with Michael Schumacher is also offered to clients that have purchased a 430 Scuderia through Ferrari Financial Services.

FERRARI STORES

The Ferrari Store opening programme continues apace across the world too. Stores were officially inaugurated in Beijing, Los Angeles, Shenyang, Barcelona, Al Kobar, Abu Dhabi and Macao in 2007. 2008 will see us enhance our presence in the North American market with new Stores in Honolulu, San Francisco and Miami in the first half of the year. The Singapore Store opened in January 2008 and another is planned for Moscow this year too.

FERRARI IN SWITZERLAND

With 270 road cars delivered there in 2007 (in line with the 2006 figure of 269), Switzerland is Ferrari's seventh largest market after the United States, Germany, the United Kingdom, Italy, Japan and France. It is also our largest market overall in terms of cars sold per capita of population. Ferrari maintains a strong presence in the country through Ferrari Suisse which is based at Nyon near Geneva. The latter has been directly controlled by the Prancing Horse since 1993 and is currently headed by a Giulio Zauner. Ferrari Suisse operates through a network of 10 dealerships which also guarantee a technical assistance service.

Many of our Swiss clients are involved in the GT championships, the Ferrari Challenge Trofeo Pirelli and Shell Ferrari Historic Challenge, as well as in collecting historic and Formula 1 cars from various eras. Ferrari Classiche has, in particular, had numerous certification requests from Swiss owners.
